You get what you pay for (usually), so if you want to start sipping it don’t buy the cheap bottles. I say usually since I bought a $120 bottle of Woodford “Select” or something like that, that tasted like shit compared to their standard bottle…IMO. To start, try any of these:
Bourbon: Bulleit (my favorite), Woodford Reserve (fairly sweet, but definitely a distinct flavor from other bourbons), or Knob Creek (a bit more bite than the other two but still delicious)
Single Malt: Bowmore 12 or Dalmore 12. They’re around the lower end of what I look for price-wise, and are pretty sweet highland scotches which makes them relatively easy on new tastebuds. From there you can start trying Islay’s, Speyside’s, etc.
Water - nothing wrong with adding a splash. I think the idea is to dilute it to the 35 or 40% range, but it’s entirely up to personal preference. I don’t bother because I like to keep things simple - whiskey into glass and drink. Water is just one more opening to inconsistency.
Ice - Almost always a no-go. Purists would scold you pretty harshly for cooling a good single malt as the cold masks the flavor. The exception is bourbon, which on a nice summer day can be pretty good with a chunk of ice in there. But I still vastly prefer it without ice.
The benefits of fake identities in an industry-specific forum where everyone imagines themselves 20 years ahead of where they really are…you get to project your hopes and dreams upon a canvas of others that are likely to share those ideals, whether they actually currently live the dream or not.
Nah, I’d readily admit that I am simply intellectually gifted white trash that got incredibly lucky after making a whole slew of bad decisions at a young age.
I think theres probably only a few other guys like me that exist in this industry.
Just like investments, you gotta sort through a lot of trash in order to find the people who are worthwhile, particularly in an industry that attracts asshats the way sh!t attracts flies.
Glad you’re on board, bodhisattva; you’re one of the good ones.
I like ice better because it does a better job keeping a drink chill, in my view. I use ice pretty sparingly though since I don’t want to risk diluting a drink too much. Some people prefer whiskey stones so they don’t dilute the drink at all.
Only on AF will you have a topic about “not drinking” and then a bunch of ignorant fu*ck sticks chime in about drinking. So classic. You idiots should bump an old thread about drinking or create a new one.
Tikka, concerning myself I enjoy drinking but a few times a year I go without just to see where I am, get my weight back to where it should be, etc. Right now I am getting to where I want to be performance wise. I find that dropping alcohol 100% for a bit is the only way to do it.
Everyone is different. There is an old saying “If you want to look better than everyone you have to work harder than everyone.” So sometimes it is necessary to take harsh measures and cut it out 100% and focus on your workouts. I am in my late 30s and my coworkers think I am 27-28. So I think this approach works.
Good thoughts, Blake. I’m right there with you. Do you think its gotten a lot harder to stay fit in your 30s? I just turned 30, so I’m wondering if I’m officially gonna have to work a hell of a lot harder now?
