Photo from Free Solo of El Capitan

You don’t feel adrenaline when you do this. And he’s not fearless, but hes pretty close. If you see the piece on the brain scans of him, theyll confirm.

We’re all gonna die, man

Well, this guy broke his neck in a car wreck first. Can any passion be explained…

Yeah, but he doesn’t even try to back that up and the quote is bull. If he did it would basically look like this:

Dean Potter: Dead (base jumping)

Michael Reardon: Dead (drowned)

John Bachar: Dead (free climbing at age 52)

While ignoring the fact that there are like 50 famous free climbers active right now and most of the deaths that have occurred have been in other pursuits.

It’s just a hype statement for the camera. I mean, make no mistake, if I started free climbing today, I would die. But these are super athletes that have been climbing their whole lives and typically most pursue free climbing on the side on easier routes.

Article.

Good article, another one here highlights the gravity of the achievement and the training that went into it:

When I think of the difficulty I have hanging on to the really thin pin scars, on low 5.11’s, and how easy it is to slip off small footholds on them, and then thinking that this was a 5.13a big wall… damn. What an achievement.

amazing

“The idea of being ropeless 2,000 feet up El Capitan is something many climbers have pondered while resting in El Cap meadow, smoking weed, and staring transfixed up at the granite monster towering over them. For most, those moments were nothing more than ass-puckering fantasies that would spur uncomfortable fits of laughter. For Honnold, it was a serious project to be tackled.”

lol that was great

Some more shots of the route

I agree with black swan that the probability of failure is probably much lower, even if the injury given failure is likely much higher. Emotionally, however, this picture makes me queasy

It’s really hard to fathom when you look at the photos. That article I posted (albeit written by an outdoor magazine and biased) called it the biggest athletic feat of all time, the author talking about how in the midst of 2017, it gives him something to just sit and contemplate for the week. Its even more telling that the more experienced the climber is, the more in awe they seem of the feat. The summary of the training that occurred over the last decade for this one day by the greatest climber of his generation also added more perspective to the dedication that went into it and highlights that this wasn’t just some cowboy making a rash decision. Just wow, all around.

Some dude recently solo climbed Everest with no oxygen in 26 hours (with the s h its no less).

"Forgoing oxygen aid and fixed ropes, Spanish ultramarathoner Kilian Jornet summited Mount Everest early Monday, around midnight. His roughly 12,400-foot ascent from Everest Base Camp (elevation 17,600 feet) took just 26 hours. Most hikers—supported with additional oxygen and ropes—take up to four days to cover the same distance.

The 29-year-old intended to achieve the fastest known time for both the ascent and descent from Base Camp but was forced to stop on the way down at the Advanced Base Camp (elevation 20,800 feet) due to a stomach virus. He was on the trail for 36 hours"

Yeah, but the record is like half that. It only made headlines because its Kilian Jornet and everything he does makes headlines. He’s a big time mountain runner which is basically an ultra runner that specializes in mountainous terrain. Ran up and back on Kilimanjaro in 7 hours.

His is supposedly the record without oxygen or fixed ropes.

This is so unnecessary and unfair. Sick resentment bro. I mean you effectively could apply this “logic” to any compliment given to anyone outside of a terminal context.

Terrible.

But does the bro even squat?

Ah, I must have missed the without fixed ropes part and I think I may have been thinking of his attempt last week. Didn’t realize he just went up again.

I clicked on this thinking that it had something to do with either Han or Hope Solo. I am extremely disappointed.

And @Sweep - you “encouraged” me to check out her pictures in The Fappening. I hate you for that. I used to think she was hot.
