Singapore is actually a multiethnic country which is a throwback to british colonization. Its like 70% chinese 20%. Malay and 10% indian.
Id say its economic success has far more to do with its history of a being a small british overseas colony and a trading centre with export orientated growth policies. Also, it very much benefits from very strong judicial and educational institutions and english as a primary language. All of these are a result of its history as abritish colony. I really don’t think the authoritarianism has much to do with it’s economic success. Honestly, I don’t think the success of SG or HK can be replicated without taking into account their unique history.
What do we mean by “nerds” here? Getting good grades at school? Stuck with computers and no social life?
Dont Koreans drink like crazy?
There’s no way the average Singapreans get as good grades as Chinese. In Singapore everyone uses calculators and finishes school by 4pm. In China we must calculate by heart/hand and school is finished at 7pm xD. (plus night and weekend extra classes)
Then if you define nerdy as in crazy about animes and games, Japanese should also be there.
I don’t think Indians are Asians except their land is in Asia.
Uighur please. Israelis and Saudis and Iranians and Indians and Kazakhs and Uzbeks and Papua New Guineans, they are all Asians. (OK not so sure about Papua New Guinea.)
That was what my aussie group mate at uni said to me the other day. He dated a Japanese girlfriend and said japs were very gentle while Koreans are the complete opposite (and Chinese are probably in between).
Japanese are gentle and polite on the surface but they are very weird and crazy! And and the jap girls are famous for having “white fever” and Korean girls also love western men (because Korean men are horrible) so you shouldn’t have any problems!
100% true. All their celebrities look the same. Everyday people aren’t ashamed of admitting they’ve done plastic surgeries. They are obessed with a certain golden standard of beauty. Everyone just wants to reach that standard.
Their faces are pretty fake. But they do have natural advantages over other Asians: taller, better build, longer and nice legs, and pale skin (pale skin is one of the most critial criteria of beauty in far east Asian countries)
Plastic surgeries Asian girls do usually involve: enlarging the eyes; sharpening the chin: making nose taller and smaller; reducing the cheekbones; and occasionally enlarging the breast but that’s not a priority (being skinny is far more important than having big boobs) Summary: Asian women want to look like European Barbie dolls but keep our nicer and smoother skin (no tan please) and the slow aging process.
Plastic surgery does seem to be a pervasive part of Korean culture…everytime i see a pretty Korean lady my mind instantly thinks : this maybe fake !..Women are far too obsessed with makeup / body hair in general… it is a bit weird hehe
The culture requires women to be beautiful and pretty instead of just feeling confident about who you are and your uniqueness (Iike the European culture). I guess our education system never promotes “being different”. Most people follow a standard path of success and recognition (hence the original topic of the thread - Asians being more nerdy on average - studying hard, working hard)
