Ferdinand actually survived the original assassination attempt that day as the bomb used failed to inflict enough damage to kill him or any of the members of his entourage. Later his caravan took a wrong turn and happened to pull into a side street precisely where the same assassin was walking. Seizing the opportunity, the assassin was able to kill Ferdinand leading directly or indirectly to WWI (20 mill killed), a worldwide flu pandemic (20-50 mill killed), Russian revolution (~10 mill killed), a worldwide depression (complete financial collapse), and eventually WWII (~50-80 mill killed).

Earlier in the day, the couple had been attacked by Nedeljko Čabrinović, who had thrown a grenade at their car. However, the bomb detonated behind them, hurting the occupants in the following car. On arriving at the Governor’s residence, Franz angrily shouted, “So this is how you welcome your guests — with bombs?!”[32]
