A lot of it is about knowing your own situation and being able to filter out all the noise telling you you need everything you want and finding the right balance between being fiscally responsible and living your life.
To me it seems like a lot of people think they’re entitled to everything, and not to put too fine a point on it, I’m not talking about us late 20s/ early 30s CFAs earning good money in an industry that overpays.
My people get a bad rep for being cheap but it’s really more of a cultural emphasis on value, personal utility and delayed gratification.
Was wondering this. Also wondering why the “I’m not talking about us late 20s/early 30s CFAs earning good money in an industry that overpays.” I’d think that people in finance feel entitled to more compensation than they merit.
My people as in the Scots and I definitely think we’re overpaid in the investment industry. I wasn’t smart enough (or hard working enough in school) to be a doctor or a lawyer yet I’m raking it in working average hours at an investment firm barely breaking a sweat half the time.
I’ve heard this theory, from some people but having been surrounded by a lot of doctors and lawyers as friends it never added up to me. I guess it varies by the individual. None of the doctors and lawyers I knew were particularly smart and coming from a crappy education background I had to bust my ass to move ahead, putting in at least as long as hours as them. But I also graduated my masters program in the midst of the crisis, so that may have played a role in my perception. I always viewed the doctors and especially lawyers as simply trading the volatility of a career in finance for the higher median and stability of law and med.
Edit: Also, it may be a geographical difference since doctors in the US typically make $250-450k versus what I’m told are lower amounts in the UK.
Good article, even if it did use the word forbears instead of forbearers. Pesky americans and their insistence on not pronouncing consonants, someone said the word brewery to me yesterday and it took about 4 times of saying it for me to realise what they meant.
You’re not fraud my friend, simply the product of UBI. Put on your tin foil for this one, but i believe there is some system in place to ensure more employees are working than necessary. the 20/80 (or 10/90) rule of 20% of the population doing 80% of the work has probably never been more true. Yet, if 80% of the population were fired, you’d have endless revolts, chaos, and a revolution. Instead, you get paid a livable sum to maintain peace. Imposter, no, redundant, probably.
Also being frugal or cheap isn’t something people admire. I get shit for it every time. It’s something I try to hide as much as possible unless it’s people I’m comfortable with.
in elementary school I used to trade my candy for the subsidized meal plans. When they found out I was using it they made it invalid. I actually had like 20 plus tickets saved up.
In middle school I brought my own soda and cheese to Fastfood joints. My friends made light jokes all in good fun but my sister gave me shit for it IN front of my friends. Like I got slapped for it.
In hs, I never had 5 on it, and my friends let me hear it. Just cuz I didn’t want to spend on vices. If they wanted to share then great if not then it’s cool I didn’t need it.
Out of college I used to pack a lunch and got shit for it, prolly cause I kept microwaving spam and rice and eggs but also cuz my workers wanted me to come out. So I made a deal I’d go out every Friday. Today I get free food from work from a professional chef with yogurt for breakfasts and some random snacks. It’s fantastic. Ultimate freeloading come up.
Now my parents are giving me shit about not throwing down for bottle service. They don’t want me to be labeled a freeloader but it’s like nigga its a 10k tab. My share would be 1500 and dats insane. I’ll pay for the double the opp cost at the most which is like 100 bucks.direct quote, “if you can’t afford to party then findfriends in your level” in my head I’m like hahaha these guys need networking classes.
anyways millenials like to live beyond their means. The chick I met last weekend wanted to get coffee and in my head I was like weren’t you just complaining about your finances last I met. I only drink coffee at work and only cuz it’s free and they only use the best stuff.
Bottom line what I’m trying to say is frugality is persecuted. It takes a lot of character to not care about these things. The way I think about it is I can grow my money much faster than others so every dollar I save is prolly worth exponentially more than another person. It’s faulty reasoning though cuz the truth of the matter is everyone just likes to ball out and have this perception of grandiosity around them.
Anyways toast and avocado sounds disgusting. No offense to the ppl that like that shizz. Also I spoke to my sister who makes 50k and she likes to spend 6 bucks on this shit. That’s a foot long in subway. Retarded
