I think its more about liability management. Gold digging is pursuing wealth as a primary factor in a mate (often with aspirational wealth goals), this is just taking their income or liability situation into account. Makes sense to think twice before dating someone who will bleed your lifestyle.
I have some friends in NYC right now that are having kids and struggling to establish a 5 year plan because of accrued student debt versus the costs of childcare and the fact that the wife would now like to stay home if possible. Also, (and I didn’t understand this in my youth but wish I had) having more money combined is about a view towards a common lifestyle. You should account for your desired lifestyle when picking a mate. If you want to travel, you might not pick someone who hates all travel. If you like fitness you might not pick a slob. If you like a standard of living, you should consider their earning potential against your own. Obviously if you’re straight balling it wouldn’t matter, but its classic asset liability management.
I gave a friend sh*t for this when we were younger and he said he’d prefer someone with x income so that combined they could live y lifestyle. The numbers were reasonable but I was an idealist. Looking back now and knowing how hard it was to get established I think there’s a lot of wisdom in taking that into consideration. I also think women with a meaningful career tend to have a level of practicality and intelligence to them.
Fair points. It never entered my mind back when I was dating but i suppose it would if I was dating at this age. That aside, I do feel like a lot of people in the dating game are way too prescriptive about what they want but maybe that’s just because I went into a relationship that was all wrong on paper and it’s worked well so far.

#1 and #2 both sound a bit like headcases, while #3 sounds the most promising but also least proven i.e. too young.
