Actually the gallant people were the Northern Alliance (NA) who were fighting the Taliban. Their leader, Masood, was killed 2 days before 9/11 by Al Qaeda suicide bombers sent in by bin Laden as a favor to his hosts, the Taliban. At that point the Taliban had 90% of Afghanistan and NA had 10%. After 9/11, US financed and armed NA heavily and used them against the Taliban.
Taliban came out of Muslim scholars who were hiding out in Pakistan when Russians controlled Afghanistan. They were financed by Saudis and Pakistanis and trained by Al Qaeda to fight, and returned to Afghanistan after the Russians left.
No you have it wrong. Many other factions apart from Massoud’s troops were funded by the West/KSA. Pretty much anybody who wasn’t a leftist fought against the Red army. Many of the senior commanders both in the Afghan govt, and in the insurgency made their name in that war. Karzai on the other hand did not have any military background, subsequently, he just doesn’t have the respect or power to rule that nation. Also it is important to note that it was not just the US backing these guys, other nations like P, KSA etc were allied with the US.
3 main leaders of the current insurgency are: Gulbuddin Hekmatyar,Sirajuddin Haqqani (son of Jalaluddin Haqqani), Mohammed Omar. They made their name in that war.
