Dang, that was a piss pounding. Did not expect that.
Technique is everything to concentrate on but to say strength is nothing is a false statement. Ill hold dominate position on purple belts all day if they are smaller than me. Ill bait purples and advanced blues with triangle/guillotine opportunities knowing they will fail and ill be able to pass into a better position.
Perhaps what he meant is to use only technique and not to rely on strength to maximize your caliber.
I still believe wrestling is a better skill to focus on than bjj , all things considered. To bad their aren’t many schools that will segment out an hour of time for strictly take down training.
^ we have wrestling class there as well
The total classes include jiu jitsu gi, no gi, Muay Thai, wrestling, strength and conditioning, and yoga
Ive never been exposed to BJJ of this caliber though, it is very challenging and am pretty into the sport… much respect for getting blue, whatsyourgovt
It is like a chess game as you said - sacrificing one thing for position to the next. It’s pretty cool.
Ha!!! Happy to see my thread is still going after 2 years !
Lol @ Ronda.
She has the boxing and striking defense of someone who has sparred like only 5 times in their life.
Not sure wtf she has been focusing on during her year-off.
That coach of hers is a POS. So glad Werdum teeped him.
@ Analti calte : Wait, are you saying that you started training full-time ? As in your quit your job ? Or as in you train 2x / day 6 day / week ?
That Ronda fight was horrible to watch given how helpless and hopeless she looked in there. Though not the sole or even main reason she lst, i think she hasn’t emotionally and mentally overcome that first ko.
The only i thoroughly enjoyed was cruz-cody. Bummed my boy Cruz lost, he sat out perhaps his best yrs and now the game has caught up to him at the elite level. But that performance from Cody was great, He is legit skillwise, athletic, fast, and fought cruz like no one else had. Most of the bar was there for ronda, but they all los it during that fight.
this cat gets it.
so Ronda is fecked, Jon Jones is a massive drugs cheat and Conor is unlikely to fight in the UFC again. they need some new stars pretty quick
Dana White needs to come to the WC. I’m sure there are many super-fit BSDs on here that could step in anytime, training camp or not.
There is no way a gorilla is more badass than a hippo
So all you hardcore guys, what are your martial arts related injuries? I’ll start, blown ear drum, molar popped and turned into shards/disintegrated in my mouth from a choke hold, tore a hamstring and one broken nose.
Oh man, last night was in MMA sparring class, things were pretty typical. I was doing a few rounds with this pro who is a bit lighter than me. I can honestly take some pretty hard gut shots and most kicks to the torso without much damage. If someone can teep really hard, a good punch teep will stun me for a second if it is like a good punch with the ball of the foot. I’ve kind of been working on eating a lot of strikes lately and doing a simultaneous counterattack. But, last night this pro throws this spinning heel kick that I thought was going to be real lame (it seemed slow). He kind of whipped around quickly it in the end though. I could have taken a step back to avoid it but decided to eat it and throw a cross. I kind of turned away from it and blocked my face and he caught me in the back of the ribs, like my last rib down. Maybe it was a good kidney heel shot or something, but that mofo hurt. Damn, I can’t eat one of those spinning heels again from this dude. I thought in some way also I could possibly catch his kick and take full mount on the ground with a takedown, but just went with a cross after I ate the kick. But, in a real fight, it would be a bad idea to get on the ground with this guy. I wouldn’t go for a takedown. He’s a really good BJJ purple and even though he’s a lot lighter than I am, he destroys me in no-gi. Most of his opponents like to stay standing unless they are brown or black BJJ belts. We did some other drills and I was largely fine, but really tight. I had to do damn near a couple of hours of wind down cardio after that to loosen up a bit and this morning it feels like someone was dropping bricks on my side all night whilst sleeping. Yesterday we were also doing some takedown drills. This class is probably the most ‘rambunctious’ of all the classes on the schedule. This bigger dude who is also an instructor (he’s maybe like 210, jacked) was trying to get this other dude on the ground and then he just straight up picked him up and helicoptered him over his head, Hollywood style, and threw him on the ground. Hahahaha classic. It was effective. It knocked the air out of him and our coach knows it but is all like ‘defense, defense’ to the guy with the wind out of him on the ground. We kind of had a discussion after that about what to do if you get the wind knocked out of you. If you can’t get through that 5sec or so, you’re screwed. We were doing 5min rounds on takedown defense against the wall and this jacked dude (another instructor) couldn’t take me down. He looks a lot stronger than he really is. At the end of the round, with maybe 30sec left I started doing some clinch/knees and stuff, which made me vulnerable for a takedown and he finally got it. No time to submit on the ground though, timer buzzed. #JustAnotherMonday
ehhhh well apparently “boxing” will be the first time in the ring (head coach says thats step 1 of his strategy for me and I have to follow it). I am not a fan of boxing and wanted to do Muay Thai. Apparently I have to do Boxing + Muay Thai + MMA training to get in the ring so seem back to stage 1 in a way now, but basically signed in blood to be on the team from now on, so I have to come in every day. I am such an idiot. Right before this 70.3. Damn it. Fuck. I kind of wanted to come in light this week, but might have to take some hits in sparring. I get zero points for the half iron. Prob will train MMA Sat/Mon.
My new Thai Striking coach might come to sparring tomorrow - he’s teaching the 6pm striking (when I’m in BJJ) - not sure if he is coming to sparring. He is a pro fighter. Very interested to see his striking abilities in sparring. I’m doing a Gi class, then Boxing, then Muay Thai sparring tomorrow night. I’ve actually sparred Muay Thai against his girlfriend, she is skilled/hot. I haven’t trained much with him though.
lol damn. the song i beat the pussy up comes to mind.
my friend is big into bjj now and rolling and his wife has to drain his ears almost on a weekly basis (especially after wrestling). Many days i miss training/sparring but I think you get to an age when it’s just not worth it (despite what jocko/rogan says)
my 2 cents - stop sparring all together. Grappling is fine but the head trauma from sparring is nothing to joke around with. When i was sparring the entire CTE and brain loss functionality was just coming to light (despite common sense saying this all along). In today’s era its common for UFC fighters to practice sparring abstinence for this exact reason.
Agreed with wyg for me. To each their own, but I don’t put myself in situations where I’ll be struck in the head. Rolling (fortunately no cauli for me as yet, knock on wood) and pad work is about it from a combat sports perspective.
