But how do I find out which city would be the best? I messages people on LinkedIn but it’s very limited.

Waterloo is still very white. Probably around 85% of the townies are white while maybe 30-40% of the students are asian, mostly east asian. You may face a bit of an obstacle getting a job here due to race as well because of the sheer whiteness of it and the lack of minorities on hiring commitees. While the whiteys in Waterloo are generally not racist at all, they will want you to communicate effectively so toning down the accent would help here, as it will anywhere. The only place where a heavy accent wouldn’t be a major issue in Toronto or Brampton.

There are a good number of accounting jobs here, both at Big 4 firms and within tech companies. That said, Laurier is the #1 school in the country for accounting grads so you will be facing a legion of accounting majors when applying for jobs here, probably more than anywhere else.

There are plenty of accounting and finance jobs in Toronto and Mississauga but cost of living is crazy. You can buy twice the house in Waterloo and almost everything else is 5-10% cheaper.

Since I live here, and chose to live here in my early 20s after school after having grown up in Brampton/Mississauga, I obviously recommend coming to Waterloo for work and life. Worst case scenario is that you have a hard time finding a job because it’s a small market and you end up moving to the GTA which is less than an hour away. Waterloo is a good launch pad. You will easily find work within an hour drive. Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and London are all within an hour drive of Waterloo (and Kitchener/Cambridge). That’s like 8 million people. I’m positive you’d find work with Waterloo as your starting point.

All kidding aside, why should any rational person care about whether their employees look like minorities or not? That’s just stupid.

I can see the problem if you hire someone with a strong accent. (I’ve had students who have complained about other professors with strong accents. Many students couldn’t understand what the professor was saying. How can such a professor do his job properly?) But assuming that that’s not the issue, who cares if you’re African, Indian, Russian, Chinese, Brazilian, Thai, whatever?

(I know: many people do. Many people are stupid.)
