Well, asteroids are often detected literally within days of them flying by the earth. For example, 2017 BH30 was detected on Jan 30 and passed between the moon and Earth on Feb 2. When a radio telescope initially detects an object all you know is that it is a dot moving on the sky. You have no way of knowing how far away it is. As you get more telescopes pointed at the object you can get more info on how big it is and how far away it is, but you don’t always have a lot of time to make those observations. The amount of federal spending on this is startlingly low, and they are looking to cut funding to Arecibo, which is a crucial radio telescope

So, to respond to your question: we could be told tomorrow that we have 1 year to live or that we have 1 hour to live. Most people prefer to live in fantasy land because it is more comfortable for them.
