No, you should seek to avoid taxes like everyone does. Taxes suck, which is why they’re a good incentive. I max out my 401k, which when you think about it is a pretty privileged thing to be able to do because many people don’t have 401ks and many people that do have 401ks can’t afford to max them out. So, I get to enjoy special tax treatment because I make enough money in a job with benefits. That incentivizes me to save for retirement.

Its kind of the other way around. The government provides a minimum existence for all, equally. Then raises taxes as fit to fund everything. Its then not a subsidy to the poor aa you’d get the same cheque. This defacto happens today. The government will prevent your death from lack of resources. We might as well accept that and do it more fairly and equitably with less market distortions. Lastly, it eliminates the disincentive to find work. Now, if you get a better job, your benefits are reduced. So why bother improving yourself? With this scheme, everyone gets the same benefit so there is a constant incentive to work harder.
What is your suggestion? The wealthy do pay a much greater amount of tax than the poor. You certainly would not argue that point. You say a greater percentage? What percentage of total government revenue should be raised from the top 10%? Give us your tax system if you were king. Income? Sales? Gains? Estate? Can you tax one group without it having an effect on a different group? Isn’t concentration of wealth needed to drive commerce?

i’m saying that you should be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour during your lifetime but when it comes to pay society back for all the support, you should be forced to do so whole-heartedly. estate tax should be higher and/or you could have a two-tier sales tax system (i.e. luxury tax) to pull in additional income from the frivolous before their death. a global wealth tax is also an optimistic option.
you can’t look at very HNW individuals as if they earned their monstrous estates w/o leveraging the working poor, existing infrastructure (which is often constructed with the blood and sweat of the working poor) and the indirect and sometimes direct benefits of the military. there is an argument to be made that the top end should pay all, or nearly all, of the taxes. why even bother inefficiently taxing a household that makes under $50,000? you’re probably just going to need to float that boat anyway. as a society, we’re all responsible for each other. i find it disgusting when it is left to small communities to fend for themselves, when they live within a larger, more capable population.
The idea that how the government taxes something depends on who earned it, or spent it, or transferred it, or sold it, creates incredible conflicts of interest in the way we are governed and in how we vote. So much strife and gamesmanship would be eliminated. Tax spending, income, gains, whatever. Leave the people out of it.
I’m in the top tax bracket. If I go drive for Uber tonight, I’ll be making just more than half has much as the other clowns driving around. Same job, same wage. But the government wants to know how big my dick is before they decide how much of my money they take. If I decide not to work my “normal” job next year, collect no dividends, and sell nothing, the government will let me keep all my Uber earnings even though my dick will be just as wonderful.

yep if you make 5,000 you probably dont have to pay much in taxes, and if you make 500k you do. But until that tax rate leaves you with a very similar amount of money you would be better off and will continue to work the 500k job, no matter how much you bitch about the taxes…
on top of that, why not help out the guy making 5,000? Or those who labor to support you and enable you to make 500k? Whats wrong with having some of your money go to them and others? Its such a bizarre selfish attitude, I thought by this point society may have evolved a bit more, but instead we have a thread where someone still tries to link their desire to give all their money to their heirs as some sort of natural instinct the way we are programmed to procreate…get over it, its money not your health.
like i said, i’m fine with a global wealth tax, estate tax and luxury tax. i’ll gladly pay those when i’m rich enough to pay them because i’m greatful for the opportunity my country offers me. i wouldn’t expect to have to pay those until i have reached the point where my capital begins to fully utilize the power of my country’s low cost workforce, infrastructure and military (though technically we probably benefit more from your military than our own).
And I am happy to pitch in for that military even if some of its services benefit our neighbor to the north. I know its not the optimal use of my capital, and I should be able to pick everything I support or dont with my money, but call me crazy i think its the right thing to do as a human being.
