watches

im with green man.

Here’s a bit of perspective from Asia… I see rich tourists around here wearing $2,000+ watches that aren’t even set on the right time (not due to time zone differences). I see them paired with sweat pants. I see them paired with poofy neon down jackets. I see them paired with dress pants + badminton shoes. I see them paired with god awful body odor. I see these same tourists pack the luxury watch stores on Chinese New Years when virtually every other store is closed.

Will spending more money on a fancy watch make me look like a BSD around here? Nope, the tourists are already wearing some of the best watches money can buy like friendship bracelets.

Do I have the slightest urge to get the watches that these guys are wearing? Nope, I’m quite content wearing the ~$150 watch my girlfriend gave me that barely peeks out from under my sleeve while I use my phone to tell the time.

^ wait, if you don’t use your watch to tell the time and it doesn’t even appear visible…

then you’re wearing the watch just to feel there’s something strapped to your wrist??

Barely visible =/= Invisible. I think of it more like a subtle decorative piece like cufflinks.

I actually use my watch frequently. But if I leave the house without a watch on, I feel “naked”, or like there’s something missing. I’m used to having the weight on my left wrist.

This. I’ll look for the time on my computer, phone, or a clock on the wall before I look at my watch. But if I forget to wear it it’ll drive me crazy all day long.

Bump, for Blake.

Wait, somebody makes a shoe designed specifically for badminton? It’s settled, there are no inventions left.

+1.

And my wrist has some serious tan lines from my watch so it looks funny when I’m not wearing it. Same goes with my wedding ring. Even if I took my wedding ring off, everyone would be able to tell that a ring belongs on that finger from the tan lines plus the permanent indentation.

BTW, what happened to Mr. Watch Guy, ohai. Is he MIA?

I just wear a $500 watch my wife gave me. To be honest I hate wearing watches, rings, etc. so there is no reason to buy an expensive watch.

I’m getting myself a Tag Heuer when I pass level 3. Probably a carrera. Buying duty free in an overseas airport seems the most cost effective way of doing it. UK prices are always higher.

Thoughts on square watches like the tag Monaco?

How about white or colour faces? Or stick to classic black?

I have this one, got it as a birthday present from my girlfriend. Looks nice with a suit, clean look and I like the hands.

Looks just like a normal watch.

What do you guys think is the proper age to wear a watch like this?

I have one and it was my wedding present. I never wear it unless I’m visiting my in-laws in our native country. I always thought it was too gaudy for a younger person to wear. But maybe I’ve finally reached the age where it doesn’t look too cheesy anymore.

60+ dude. I have a relative who has the same watch. If I saw an Asian in his 20s wearing this I would probably lose it. Just being honest.

^Exactly what I needed. I’m actually fast approaching the big 40 but still look young. I guess I’m sticking to old faithful. Stainless steel tag I got as a high school graduation present. The thing is bulletproof.

I have a stainless tag myself which I have had for 16 years. I sent it back to the factory in january for an overhaul so I expect another 10+ years easy. If I was in the market for a Rolex I would buy this: http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f2/680341d1334382180-omega-seamaster-vs-rolex-explorer-ii-201470-2.jpg

suggestions for a quality timepiece for the wife? i’m thinking you have to go with a classic look so it doesn’t go out of style on her. i’m thinking basic lady aqua terra. what do you think about quartz vs automatic? I feel like ponying up for the automatic is wasted on someone who has no idea what the distinction is.

Somebody tell this guy his cell phone tells time just as well as this $1 million watch.

Most women are ok with quartz watches, as these watches tend to be smaller and more subtle than mechanical watches. In addition, women generally recognize that watches are jewelry and are thus willing to overlook mechanical differences in favor of outward appearance. In terms of brand perception, women also gravitate towards watches manufactured by luxury jewelry brands such as Cartier or Chanel, rather than those made by dedicated watch companies such as Omega or Rolex.

If I were to recommend an expensive watch as a gift to a woman whom I know nothing about, I would say go for some kind of Cartier. This brand is universally appreciated, uncontroversial, timeless, and has some credibility among watch observers of either gender. Your selection will be somewhat limited at the price of the Omega Aqua Terra Seamaster above. However, you should be able to pick up some kind of Tank watch or (preferably) something else in the $2000-$3000 range.
