watches

there is a stark disconnect between the self-reported average comp for AF members in that other thread and some of the expensive watches discussed here. my theory is that there must be two different non-intersecting subsections of AF posting in both threads

hahaha

Or there are rich families somehwere.

Or these are simply what people hope to get when they hit it big.

For me, I have a few watches that are nice, though none of them are terribly expensive. They’re expensive enough that I would be annoyed to have to replace them, but nothing that would be a disaster if they were lost.

Bulova 96G45 is my day-to-day watch these days.

Movado ESQ Filmore Stainless Steel (ESQ 07300982) tank watch with white face and blue hands - for when a white face seems better.

Swatch Blustery blue face for more sporty moments

I also have a classic Movado gold-and-black watch that was a present from my ex father-in-law. It’s too dressy for most occasions, but is very nice when I need something like that. The lack of numbers and markings on the face irritates me for day to day use, anyway.

Liking those watches help make Greenman’s comments supporting accounting in the accounting vs. finance make a lot more sense.

I worked at a hedge fund for a Summer in grad school on a 1 bil + long/short fund. The PM wore a cheap plastic type watch that was similar. He liked it because it had a bunch of alarms. He also wore Dockers and probably made 7-8 figures.

I have a Tag Heuer 2000 watch I have had for 16 years now. Just sent it back to the factory for an overhall. It looks like this:

If I was going to buy a new watch, I like this:

I’m a budget guy, but not a fossil fan. I like Kenneth Cole for my money. Have one like this (lighter colored strap) and a metal one - I’ve gotten a lot of compliments and really like it:

My weekend beater

I’m in the market for a new office watch, probably will go for a PO but something about either the Ball Spacemaster X Lume or the Ball Ceramic says “I’m a BSD and I like to let it hang out. Deal with it.” Ball is a bad ass brand for sure.

That watch looks like a cheap POS dude. And you are making fun of people here for what they wear. LMAO 99% of the people who see that on your wrist are going to think it is cheap which seems like the opposite of your intentions.

Looks like a complete piece of junk.

Agreed, it looks cheap. I’m watch illeterate, but so is 99% of the population.

hahaha, nice try bro. go look at one in person and get back to me. you wear a fucking tag…to work. let me guess, you picked it up at costco. nice score bro.

Ball is a very good brand. It doesn’t look cheap if you know what to look for. A Tag 2000 makes a great bar mitzvah present though.

The fact that you selected a cheap looking plastic POS as a “status symbol” indicates to me you have zero class. The fact that you feel a watch in general is a status symbol indicates to me you have little to zero confidence in yourself.

the fact that you continue to spout off on something you obviously know nothing about indicates to me that you are a pretender.

need a check here. is this the first subject that Blake is clueless about? I thought he knew everything.

…the heading of the post was “weekend beater”, not status symbol. at any rate ball makes a great watch, one of the most durable and functional in the market.

For a while, Tag Heuer has fallen out of favor among watch enthusiasts due to some questionable marketing decisions. That is, they decided to focus too much on celebrity spokespeople, and not the qualities of the watches themselves. They’ve also had some quality issues, like chronograph buttons on the Carrera coming off, or straps that tear after a year. In addition, they did not have an in-house movement, and they were focusing a lot on quartz movements (F1 line), which tends to cheapen the brand in the eyes of consumers - remember Rolex Oysterquartz?

Anyway, they’re trying to turn this image around. Enter the Carrera 1887 caliber model. It’s a big deal for them as it has a proprietary integrated chronograph movement. Plus, it’s an elegant and simple watch (unlike many of their other models…). The design is timeless and the watch will probably hold its value well compared to other Tags. It’s probably the only Tag that I would consider buying right now. The only thing is that it’s a bit on the big side. You can’t tell from pictures, but I tried one on about a month ago, and it’s a bit large for my small wrists.

Ball is a good brand. Not my personal taste though. It’s a bit too modern looking, and might start to look old fashioned in 10 years. Not quite as crazy looking as U-Boat or something, of course…

that would be my only reservation in buying a ball for a dress watch. The safe bet would be the timeless look of a PO or Sub. Ball does make some more understated designs but I like the fact that thier “out there” desings are the result of form following function to a degree.

All that watch commentary reminded me of Patrick Bateman’s pop music commentaries:

“Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Hip to be Square”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it’s also a personal statement about the band itself.” *raises axe above head*

Worst are brown crocodile staps. For instance, Omega straps cost like $700 and you’ll only get two or three years if you use your watch a lot.

I never understood the point of expensive leather straps that wear out after a short time.

^ A few owners try to compensate wearing these dress watches less but yeah, there’s nothing rational about spending more than I don’t know say $500 on a watch, let alone ~$700 for an original crocodile strap. Still people buy them.
