Other than for style, people buy leather straps for comfort and lightness. Mechanical watches are generally pretty heavy, especially nowadays with the upsizing trend. Omega Planet Ocean with a metal bracelet must weight like a pound. I can understand why someone might trade off the durability of a metal strap for the lightness of a leather strap.
Supposedly, a high quality leather strap can last for years. However, you have to take care of it - don’t get it wet, treat it with special oils, etc. It’s a bit too high maintenance if you ask me.
Exactly right. I’m aware of what my watch says about me. It says exactly what I want it to say about me.
I doubt I’ll ever spend more than $200 on a watch, and it will probably be of the Citizen/Omega/Seiko category. But I work in West Texas, remember? People don’t put a lot of value on watches out here. Most of them wouldn’t know a $10,000 watch if it hit them in the face. But everybody knows that if you’re driving a truck (which is the only thing to drive out here), then the Ford F-150 Platinum is the thing to get.
If I ever get a job where I “need” a Patek Philippe or Cartier watch, then I’ll get one. And I’ll get an Armani or Zegna suit. And I’ll get a Mont Blanc pen. But until then, my Casio can tell the time just as well as your “fancy” watch.
And if you move to West Texas, then you better git yurself a big ol’ truck. The only people who drive them hybrid thangys is gaywads and Democrats, which is the same thing. ( It should be obvious that this is hyperbole.)
This is exactly me. Every advertisement was just another super-expensive actor or sports figure. All I could think of is what kind of huge markup a Tag watch must have just to pay for these people. They just made it ridiculously obvious the expensive price tag wasn’t going to the quality of the watches themselves. Huge turn-off.
Maybe it is more reliable? 250x more, probably not. The luxury watch argument is the same as many luxury items. Why buy a Mercedes S Class for $90k when you can buy a similar sized sedan for under $30k. Why buy a Zegna suit when a Men’s Warehouse suit keeps you clothed as well. We could continue to beat this argument for another 10 pages and some people will never be convinced one way or the other. Its your money, spend it how you want it.
Yes, I’m fully aware of what a luxury watch is supposed to say. I am of the opinion still, that spending $20,000 on a Cartier watch is foolish, no matter what it’s for. When I see somebody with a watch that costs five figures, I don’t think, “Wow–you must be rich and powerful–like the great Wizard of Oz!” I think, “Wow–there’s somebody with more money than brains. Or with no brains AND no money, because they spend it all on watches.”
I realize that I may be in the minority on this, but there is an upper limit on how nice a watch can really be. Anything beyond this is sheer vanity and “look-at-me-ism”.
