I have been struggling for more than a year now. I am getting desperate to be honest. Oh yeah, and in this market CFA doesn’t mean anything. and Job boards on CFA associations are useless

i concur. cfa means nothing these days. the cfa jobline is of no help either. i work in ER, but want to change industry since 1 yr. went to some interviews, on the PE side, but nothing. they did not hire anything currently, they are on budget freeze.

CFA career resources (jobline)/NYSSSA (local chapter) are absolutely horrible. We spent all this time/money getting the charter and it is evident the CFA folks are more interested in recruiting new candidates than in actively becoming an active participant in marketing the charter to prospective employers and maintaining an active database of openings. The NYSSA uses efinancialcareers for god’s sake!!!

“cfa means nothing these days” Did it ever mean anything?

Sometimes I am wondering if I am not wasting my time…

2 years Investment Banking Coverage, 1 year Equity Research, and 2 years at a tiny (I’m talking < $50mm) long/short equity hedge fund…28 years old Been unemployed for 1-month (my position was terminated, I was getting paid peanuts haha…principal said they couldn’t afford to keep me on the payroll any longer and will give good reference)… Sent out 35 applications… -1 phone interview with T-Rowe Price then got rejected… -Went through 3 rounds with a financial institution advisory firm that I’m waiting to hear back on… -Went through a super-sat interview to become a middle school math teacher that I’m also waiting to hear back on… My opinion: find a new career…what is happening to analysts now is the same thing as what happened to computer programmers back in 2001…ITS THE “NEW NORMAL” AS THE HEAD GUY AT PIMCO SAYS!!!

You got some solid experience. I thought people like you have people recruiting you not the other day around. When you say peanuts, i’m assuming over 100k right? the CFA is not going to land anybody a job anymore. those days are over. but the knowledge is still important.

Your point about what is happening to “analysts” is a valid one but I think rather the return as you noted is to solid credit analytics in the context of traditional bank lending. If & when securitization comes back there will also be growth there. ER as a job function is largely going away…this is not a new trend…as information becomes more available this makes sense - it’s also good for CFAs that will no longer work 80hr work weeks to publish useless book reports for the “street”

Middle School Math Teacher - $45-46k…

Under $100k…trust me no one is recruiting us in the current environment

That’s exactly how I look at it. If it helps me get a job, good. If it doesn’t, then I still learnt things that can help me when I interview.

let me ask some of you this. If you can’t tell people you got the cFa, would people actually think you have it? that to me is the true test. u416047, with people like you not getting called back, I might as well just give up sending out my resume. Its time to get in the door.

I hope you are joking here with these stats, also what middle school pays their teachers $45k starting out?

Anybody have a success story to tell?

Graduated with a below average GPA from a non-Ivy top-tier liberal arts college. Had a non-finance job that I hated right out of college. Networked like crazy and found a much better entry level job with a great career path, not directly in research but a great place with a lot of exposure. Left my first job, found an unpaid internship at a HF doing research and starting my new gig in < 2 weeks.

@wake2000 - Why would I kid? 15-20 of the applications are made on efinancialcareers.com so it is padded a little bit b/c as far as I’m concerned that is a useless job board… the financial advisory position was through monster.com
