Winning PCP Investigation

Why is that crazy? “Sales tax” is roughly equivalent of VAT, but each state has different sales tax rates - for one, this allows manufacturers (and interstate retailers or restaurants) to advertise a consistent price among locales. I’m sure you could realize that there are accounting and other benefits for a country such as the US where individual states set their own tax policies.

You have to understand that what may be most logical in one country would not necessarily be best in another. There are things that we do in the US, that while they may seem most natural to me, I wouldn’t try to impose them as the proper way to do things elsewhere.

It also helps weed out those who can do math from those who cannot.

lol. You are indeed a rare breed of 'merican.

Nice subtle jingoism. Maybe try living overseas for a few years in foreign cultures and you won’t pigeonhole people based on something as superficial as country of citizenship. Frankly I find it distasteful to take potshots at a nation on a message board that’s frequented by such an international group. Every country has its ups and downs (my experience with Australia and its people has been extremely positive).

I try never to pigeonhole an individual, but pigeonholing a nation or a group is a very useful tool. Don’t tell me that you don’t do it. We all do. It’s part of our basic cognitive process.

"I try never to pigeonhole an individual, but pigeonholing a nation or a group is a very useful tool. " Aren’t you pigeonholing an individual when you pigeonhole a nation or a group?

“Check three times whenever you are engaged in a transaction with a South Asian. " Really?? is it exclusively South asian? “Don’t try to prove a point; it’s a waste of time as they will never concede that you were right even with insourmountable and irrefutable evidence. Just smile and nod and walk away. Or if it makes you feel better, say “Choot ti ya” and walk away. " aaha so you meant indians and pakistanis?which other south asian would use the the word “Choot ti ya” i wonder my answer to this epithet is” tu kahan se nikla tha bhosedike?”

Yes, I know it sounds confusing and it is. Try and take your emotions out of it - I’m not picking on South Asians - they just happen to be the “group” Bchad is dealing with at 7/11 and I am the resident expert on explaining South Asians to goras on this forum. Let’s try and work this out by picking a random positive stereotype, which we can probably all agree is true. “Asians like math / are good at math.” If you were to ignore this and say that it isn’t true, then you’d be an idiot. It’s factual. Go to any graduate program in the US and you will find it chocked full of Asians. Go to an Art History program and you won’t see hardly any Asians (protip: but you will meet a lot of hot wealthy chicks - another true stereotype) So, if I say, “Asians like math,” I’m employing a useful and factually true stereotype about Asians. However, if I meet an Asian at work I try not to just assume that he is good at math. He might be, but he might not be. Not all Asians are good at math. Just like not all black people are good at basketball or rapping. But by and large most top basketball players are black people. Yet, I can’t say that an Asian can’t be a basketball player, correct? We have Jeremy Ling and Yao Ming to refute that. But the stereotype that basketball players are black is still correct. Get where I’m coming from? To deny the veracity of the group stereotype would be politically correct ignorance. But to apply it to the individual might not be fair.

Yes, I mean primarily mean primarily Pakistanis and Indians. The odds that the gentlemen Bchad encountered at 7/11 in the US were either Indian or Pakistani are pretty high. You may not be aware of that if you have never been to a 7/11 in the US. The odds that they were nepalese, sri lankan, or from Bhutan pretty slim. South Asian though is the best word available. If we can invent one for Pakistan+Indian then I would be happy to use that.

Very well explained. thanks

clubbing pakis and indians errr… possible but might be controversial.

wouldn’t it be natural to apply the group stereotype to the individual. It is tempting to do so.

Do you have anything positive to say about Indians/Asians whatever you call them.

Yes, it is very tempting, but one should try not to do so because it is unfair to the individual. I should not think that every black person is a robber just because the majority of crimes I hear about on tv are committed by black people. But at the same time, I would be stupid to walk through a poor black neighborhood late at night and think that my risks are the same as a high end white neighborhood. As a hiring manager I would miss out on opportunities if I only hired people based on their gender, race, religion. For example In India, I hire dalits now and then, even though many in my staff don’t like this - and they have their reasons for this. I hire them because they INDIVIDUALLY appear to be the best person for the job. It’s a sensitive issue. But let’s say hypothetically, that I too think Dalits on a whole are bad to hire. I weed out the bad ones and hire the few “exceptions.” That is much more fair and the benefit is mine because I get the best man for the job at a discount. Do I have nice things to say about Indians? Plenty. But I prefer to treat India and it’s people as grownups and not children. You don’t need my praise. Or at least, you shouldn’t.

Q - How many starting defensive backs are there in the NFL? A - 64. Q - How many are black? A - 64. Q - Given that blacks constitute 20% of the national population, what are the odds that this is purely by chance? A - .2 ^ 64 power, or about one in 540,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Q - If you were a scout looking for a defensive back, how much time would you devote to looking for a non-black defensive back? A - ??? “Pigeonholing” a group can have a lot of advantages.

Safeties are also defensive backs. I don’t know off the top of my head, but I thought there were still a couple token white guys starting at safety. FWIW, I wouldn’t classify Troy Polamalu as black. He’s a Pacific Islander. I’ll assume your statement is factually correct if restricted to cornerbacks, as I can’t recall a white cornerback.

I was merely noting that it seems odd from a uk perspective. It’s not like i wrote an open letter to white house demanding it be changed post haste! the multiple tax authorities rationale makes sense but the downside to the system is that it’s open to manipulation. the prospect of getting ripped off in a large chain retailer in a developed country does seem odd. almost as odd as the fact that ‘gratuity’ has evolved to be expected and forcefully insisted upon, even for sub standard or mediocre service.

When I said “defensive backs”, I meant “cornerbacks”. And Polamalu is a Strong safety, not a free safety. Strong safeties are not (in my book) defensive backs. They’re a little bigger than a free safety, but a little faster than a linebacker.

Do you think Usain Bolt could make it in the NFL with a bit of coaching?

No, I doubt that Usain Bolt could make a NFL roster. There’s actually precedence for this situation. If you recall, Justin Gatlin once tried out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 4-year ban from international track and field, but failed to receive an invite to training camp.

He wants to play for Manchester United once he retires from athletics.

I’d say he has more chance of making it in NFL though.
