It will be Messi’s defining moment on Sunday.
I did call that Argentina is going to win it all. Let’s see…they have one day less rest and they went all the way to penalties.
legit skillz

Netherlands had no shots on goal. Didn’t deserve to advance.
Netherlands had no shots on goal. Didn’t deserve to advance.
so is everyone rooting for argentina
Germany will kill Argentina.
What do you guys think about the audience? In the semi (at the beginning) the whole crowd was against the Germans, in the final they´re going to support Germany (except the Gaucho fans), don´t they??
I can´t imagine that Brazil wants to see Messi raising the World Cup in the air…
I’m not really sure, a couple of wars and political confrontations that spilled onto the pitch because both are top tier hyper competitive teams resulting in some ugly matches where legs have been broken, players have attacked refs and there have been scandals like the ‘holy water scandal’ etc. Then there’s the whole Pele vs Maradona thing. I think Crazyman can explain better.
Germany look fucking ominous for sure and they’re the favorites but when Messi turns it on few can live with him. He’s already booked his place with Maradona and Pele for me, he’s that good but lifting the trophy in Brazil will add to his legend tenfold.
An Argentina win would be like salt on the wounds for Brazil. Your rival winning the cup on your own turf.
Yes Brazil is going to cheer for Germany. Not the least because they were far more gracious winners in the semifinals than the Argentines were, and will be far more gracious than the Argentines will be on Sunday.
Land if the Germans demolish the Argentines the way they did the Brazilians (not that I’m expecting that level of collapse) Brazilians will feel a heck of a lot better, for varied reasons.
I’d guess 95% and up pro-Germany, including the gauchos.
I think it’s much more a soccer thing than anything else. The America Cup and Libertadores Cup used to be pretty brutal - everything was fair game. Any kind of pressure inside and outside the pitch, including physical, was almost expected. In Libertadores, even today’s fans light up fireworks to make noise in front of the opposing team hotel.
This was all over S. America, but since Brazil and Argentina have been winning more over the last 40 years, the rivalry got more intense among those two. Maybe the pivot point was the 1978 WC. Argentine needed to win against Peru by five or six goals to eliminate Brazil. They won by 6-0 and most brazilians thing something shady went on that day.
There may also be some cultural clash. I’ve seen a lot of brazilians come back from Buenos Aires complaining about argentinians. However, this is probably better explained by brazilians’ own prejudices or, even more likely, tourist traps and such.
The water scandal was pretty shocking, but it was confessed way after the 90 WC and so I don’t think it affected brazilians all that much.
It’s a weird thing indeed because, before this World Cup, Argentine wasn’t particularly dangerous for my generation and younger ones. Their last semis were in 90. Maybe brazilians will get extra pissed this time around.
Another weird thing is that, as far as I know, most brazilians actually like Messi, or even Di Maria. Brazil just don’t like squads from Argentina as a basic rule, I guess.
Brazilians like Messi a lot more than they liked Maradona. Messi is like Rommel in WWII, an admirable guy who just happens to be on the opposing side.
They still don’t want Argentina to win, though the silver lining if they do win is that Argentina never faced off against Brazil directly, so the sense of “what would that match be like” remains hypothetical.
Up to about 1975, Argentina and Brazil were major rivals on virtually every topic, and there was definite dislike between the two peoples. Since 1975, however, the rivalry has shifted to a more conciliatory and cooperative relationship on all issues other than soccer. On the soccer field, the rivalry is as serious and strong as ever, but it’s only a soccer rivalry.
Good stuff, thanks for explaining.
Pyrotechnics really are a sight when done properly. Turkish stadiums sometimes leave you stunned with the shows they put on. I’m still a little in awe at this and this is probably the third time iv’e posted it in this very thread but still. Imagine walking out into this,
another convincing win for Germany here, I believe
That would be insult to injury. Many times worse than the Packers winning a SB in Soldier Field.
I’d say this is another 7-1 win.
