What’s the post 40 world look like for your everyday HF/BB FO type after they’ve accumulated somewhere between 5 - 10 million. In my experience there’s some pretty heavy consolidation and leaving only a handful of division heads / PM types. What happens to the rest of them? Not sure if 10 mill is enough to retire on at 40 if your accustomed to a 500k - 1.5m annual salary.

^ plus 90% probably get divorced so the $5M turns to $2.5M but you still have to go buy another house.

Yes, a lot of financiers have lavish lifestyles, and “golden handcuffs” is a common occurrence. Others simply squander their money and end up in financial distress. I know a couple of people who lost millions of their savings over time, either on lifestyle or bad investments.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to be like that. Having large amounts of savings is an opportunity to be financially free, if you choose it. For instance, it took me 10 years, but I can finally say that I can maintain a six figure lifestyle perpetually with 90% chance of success. I did this by saving 70% or more of my income and resisting temptation to spend money on status things.

When I was in my 20s, I always wanted a Porsche like my friends (you might notice my interest in cars), but I bought spx instead, with everything I could spare. Today, I check my portfolio on Personal Capital, and I realize I made enough money to buy one with today’s gains alone. Knowing that I can choose any life now, or that my family will most likely never have to worry about financial well being: it is a pretty nice feeling.

That might have gone too far, but the point is that income doesn’t have to spoil you. There are a lot of people who ruin their lives in finance, but there are a lot of people who just become free.

pretty much my approach except i never earned enough to retire early

This is pretty awesome man. Grats. It seems you’ve made it to or are close to being in the top 1% by NW.

I would caution though that even for those making high salaries in finance or tech, that it’s really really hard to get to your level; probably even harder to keep it. Your journey seems to have been achieved by: 1) unique savings tactics (70%, let alone the recommended 20%, is often not doable for most, especially if living in a high cost city); 2) good investment decisions (also hard to replicate); and 3) a record bull-market.
