Best way to get rid of racism? Stop talking about it.

That worked really well in the 1920s and 30s.

Freeman has a good point in that looking for racism in every little corner or misspoken phrase can be counterproductive and intensify the problem. But simply not talking about it at all doesn’t magically make racism go away, either.

Is there a reason that interracial couples of negro and caucasian are predominately negro men and caucasian women? It seems very rare to see a white man choose a black woman. Is there a social message here? Why aren’t negro women desirable to white men, or to the black men that choose the white women.

Isn’t that where the line “once you go black you don’t go back” comes from?

As for the reverse, a brother once told me “White women are f!!!ing hot! That’s one thing you white people do well”.

While there are good and bad ways to make a point, I do think it is reasonable to encourage people to learn the primary language of the country where they live. If I had to move to Portugal, learning Portuguese would be the first thing I would do.

It may have something to do with the “strong woman” personality. I don’t think many white guys know how to handle the Beyonce mindset.

While there are good and bad ways to make a point, I do think it is reasonable to encourage people to learn the primary language of the country where they live. If I had to move to Portugal, learning Portuguese would be the first thing I would do. In the US, mastering English will lead to higher standards of living for ESL residents and better educational attainment for their kids.

If you look at elementary school rankings, there are separate statistics for English speaking kids and non-English speaking kids. Addressing the language disparity is the first step to providing a better future for these kids. Why insist on hanging onto your native culture if it is giving you a disadvantage in life? When in law school, my wife volunteered for a clinic that provided asylum to non-English speaking immigrants. Because these people only spoke their native dialects, they were unaware of their legal rights and were able to find only menial employment. Learning English would have dramatically improved their lives.

One issue in the US is that wealth disparity is being increasingly addressed through distributive means, rather than by addressing the underlying causes of the problem.

Nothing against learning the language of your host country but, conversely, I hope you are not suggesting that knowing / respecting / appreciating foreign languages as well makes you less patriotic.

No - in fact, patriotism is a strange concept to me, maybe due to my background. I’m just saying that the “learn English” mentality is ultimately grounded in practical reasons, and we would be foolish to put native cultures of foreign immigrants ahead of these practical reasons.

By ‘strong woman’, you mean the auora of arrogance, b!tchfits, entitlement, and attitude?

I think we had a thread about black woman awhile ago. There was a comment along the lines of, “Yeah, could you imagine how rough Hurricane Shaniqua would be!”

I think its easy to look past race when the other person is good looking.
