How Do You Hand In Your Notice At A Hedge Fund

Ok - So my boss doesnt take any shit and he s actually quite nic most of the time. I had a review last week which was quite positive and we talked about forthcoming projects. The only problem is that I was interviewing at lunch and am now thinking of how to resign. How do people approach this and what happens if he hits the roof? We ve never been busier and he is going to be pissed…

If it’s a good place to work, why not leverage the offer to shake your boss down for more $$$?

first, why are you leaving? better opportunity? closer to home? less demanding? more pay? If it’s something he can match, then give him the opportunity.

I want to leave because I ve learnt all I can from this gig and the work over the next six months is going to be more of the same with little learning… I reckon its time to go - Even if they offered the same (+30%) which I UNLIKELY I reckon it makes sense to go regardless Remember once you hand in your notice you cannot reenge (or else you will always be the flight risk and never do anything substantial) I have seen this happen

When you hand in your notice they won’t really care, no offense. People leave companies in this industry all the time and it is something that you see everyday. Your boss won’t care b/c there are 200+ people with your skill set or a better skill set dying to have your job and he knows it. They may offer you more money b/c they don’t want to go through the hassle of hiring someone else, but I doubt it, most of the time unless you are an analyst with a huge name they will let you go no questions asked especially in this environment.

Great because I could do with a one month notice period being served without doing uch work:) I see where you are coming from - My only concern was handing everything over to him and the tension this will cause I hope I dont explode:)

One month notice??? You may hand in 2 weeks, but you will either be gone that day or in a week at the most. The company knows that after you hand in your notice that your production will fall off, whether it will or not is irrelevant, that is what they will think. Hedge funds, ER teams, etc…don’t keep people around very long after they give notice.

One month notice is minimum - So they can continue to pay and sit on the bench or force me to do 9-5. Is this not normal?

I have never heard of anyone staying on for a month after giving notice, so unless I have been living under a rock, I would say that isn’t normal, but who cares what is normal, if they want a month, then it is what it is, the question is whether your new company is willing to wait a month for you to start.

Are you in the UK? This is perfectly normal.

No, I am in the USA

Which fund is this. There is a good chance I know the PM and can tell you how he would react.

GLG UK

GLG’s reputation has gone down the tubes, get the f*kk out of there ASAP. Your job doesn’t really sound essential to their business, the way it works over there your boss will probably forget your name 2 minutes after he kicks you out the door. I see headhunters circulating GLG positions all the time, they will have a replacement in your spot within a week.

Is it the guy that was on the telly earlier this year? The dutch fella with the awesome name who tried to get some amateurs to trade? I’d film it if I was you, great television.

maybe things are different in UK- but at firms I’ve worked in stateside many positions have inherent zero notice policy. If you quit you get escorted out the door- lest you download client info, models and such.

that is interesting if the UK keeps people around after they give notice. US in our industry agree with akanska- most of the time, you hand in your 2 weeks, they walk you out the door and take your badge (even if this was a friendly-type exit). nice knowing you. they don’t want to risk the info you’re going to take over the next 2 weeks and rightfully so.

That doesn’t really make sense intuitively. Presumably, the person who is handing in his notice knows he is going to quit, so he would be able to download any models and info he wanted to take. Why would he wait for the 2 week notice period to do that?
