On a side note, there must be a daily orgy at the Athletes’ Village, right? I mean, hundreds of the best-conditioned athletes of the world put together, most of them single, tension levels at the limit. Yeah, that’s the only logical conclusion. Sick stuff has to happen every night.
Totally agree with you. Same applies to the pole vault – if three people can all get a bronze medal (in addition to a gold and silver being awarded as was the case yesterday), why do we have these ridiculous tiebreaking policies in gymnastics? Is it really so much of an issue that they can’t award multiple bronze medals there too, especially for gymnasts that so clearly deserve it? Agree that their tiebreaking procedure is somewhat arbitrary, but I guess it’s as good of a tiebreaking method as there is if that’s what they’re going for.
I think the Romanian and Russian gymnasts are just so much more graceful. I remember the first Olympics that I watched intently back in 1992, and it seemed so much more artistic back then. I guess the sport has also changed greatly, not to mention that the funding that was once available for developing gymnasts in Russia and Romania isn’t the same today as it was in the past. Well, Catalina Ponor is still my favorite, though Sandra Izbasa isn’t too shabby either. That said, if I were back in high school, I’d do anything to get McKayla Maroney to make a b*tch face at me.
I see. Next time wifey is sorry because a chick didn’t medal in gymnastics I’ll tell her that maybe it was because the night before the entire Lithuanian weightlifting team rammed that chick until the wee hours.
The huge cost is why they can’t show the big events live. They have such a high cost that the only way to make money is to show the popular events on tape delay during prime time when advertising rates are at their peak.
They would take a huge loss if they were showing big events in the morning and afternoon when people are at work. Especially with DVR and the time differences (5 hrs East coast, 8 hrs West coast).
Dude are you serious? the Superbowl gets the highest rates in advertising and it’s only one game. The Olympics is two weeks and a prime time ad goes for nowhere near what a Superbowl ad goes for.
My point is showing the 100m live on Sunday at 6pm was feasible instead of showing the event they were showing. It’s not like the 100m event was Wednesday 11am. The fact it was 6 pm Sunday shows me that the organizers tried their best to have it in prime time in the most time zones possible. We are talking here about THE event of the Olympics.
I would think that someone who works in finance would understand that it’s all about the money but I guess you don’t. Prime events get shown in prime time when advertising rates are at their peak. NBC is a business and to profit from paying 1 bill this is their strategy and it makes complete sense.
I can’t speak to the 100m final, but a lot of the “big” events were shown live on one of NBC’s Olympic channels and then re-broadcast in prime time on the flagship channel. I was off on Thursday and had the women’s gold medal soccer match on while I was doing stuff around the house. In addition, everything except the opening and closing ceremonies were available live online. NBC has the next 3 games, so I’m hopeful they’ll tweak things going forward. Rio shouldn’t really be an issue, but Sochi will have time zone issues even worse than London.
Did any of you guys find the Olympic closing ceremonies to be as utterly boring as I did? No offense to any of you that were on stage or volunteering at the event.
