Can you describe your typical day in your respective field? Back in the day I was working in BO, here was my typical day. Portfolio Administrator at RIA 5:30: Hit the gym across street from office. Beat the downtown traffic and get amped up for a big day of monkey work! 6:30-6:45: Begin daily download for Advent via download. 7:30: Finish loading all the daily files, prior day trades, dividends, etc. 8:00: Begin portfolio reconciling! The main drag, this takes about 3-5 hours where I go through 100s of accounts checking on cash balance inconsistencies, failed trades, double booked transactions, etc. The main objective of my job is to be preventive maintenance for trade errors. 11:00-1:00: Finish reconciling and eat lunch. 1:00: Load prior day prices for securities and fixed income. 2:00: Account maintenance: Open new accounts as needed, update benchmarks, change managers, close, update, etc. 4ish: Go home for the day. (L1 Studying) At anytime during the day phone calls, emails, faxes will interrupt me with clients demanding their balance, unrealized gains/losses, sending reallocation forms, withdrawals, wires, etc. Not a terrible interruption; overall it was a pretty quiet job. I forgot to include this though, in order to maintain my sanity, I checked AF several times hourly. ---------- My time in Tax as a Tax Associate 8:00-12:00: Arrive and begin data entry from client information to ProSeries tax software. My main duty was to kick off the tax return by doing as much as I could and then pass the tax return off to the next person on the chain to continue and or finish. Many times I could complete the individual tax return, but many clients also had their own business or participated in a LLC or LLP. The business return was above my head. 12:00-1:00: Get mail and organize new incoming tax return data. (Make copies, organize, file management, etc.) Also, I would host my famous (now forbidden) Lunch Crunch in the L2 Forum ;-). Search function it. 1:00: Run to the post office to drop off priority mail. 1:15: Continue with data entry and tax preparation. 7:00-8:00 - Go home for the day. (Gym and L2 Studying) At any time during the day I could be interrupted with clients calling in, clients walking in, or an ad hoc request from the CPA I reported to. Overall this was not a bad temp job. I learned about tax, small business operations, and research. A few times I had to research tax items, read IRS publications, or call the IRS directly for clarification. I forgot to include this though, in order to maintain my sanity, I checked AF several times hourly.

Great thread! Job: Forensic accountant Usually, my job is 8:00AM - 6:00pm Crazy deadline days - -Deal with attorneys and/or clients -File court declarations while being under the gun navigating between Word, Excel & document inventory system. Basically learn how to churn out stuff on the fly. -Calculations, math reference checks, allocations based upon analysis of various financial documents (bank statements, financial statements, tax records, etc.) and corporate documents. Also includes various real estate documents. Anything asset, debt, loan, etc. related owned by an individual / trust / corporation - we analyze & apportion appropriately. Usually the end product are detailed schedules & reports. -Flowcharts are sometimes done depending on the case. No deadline days - -Work with staff in preparation of the above. -Juggle between multiple cases at once. Multi-tasking is necessary. -Heavy data entry on bad days… -Meetings with different people. Chill days - -There are none for me anymore. CPE days are pretty chill but this is only like 2-3 days a year. After work - Either class, studying for exams, or lessons during weekdays.

Develop new strategies, improve existing strategies, extend system to further trading capabilities, put out fires. Curse anti-American FIFA sentiment. 1:30-1:45pm: Order lunch, fall asleep during the slowest quadruple witching / rebalance day ever. Check AF. 1:45-4:30pm: Test new ideas, discuss whatever crazy stuff is going on today. Ping friends around the industry to hear what they’re seeing. 4:30-7:30pm: Analyze the day’s trading/risk metrics. Allocate/de-allocate capital, adjust strategies and their parameters. 7:30-8pm: Double check that Asia operations has properly set up the next day’s trading. 8pm-8:30pm: Monitor Asian opens. 8:30pm-9pm: Leave for the day, usually meet up with friends / go to the gym / movie / etc. Later: Relax.
