Almost 2,400 people who received unemployment insurance in 2009 lived in households with annual incomes of $1 million or more, according to the Congressional Research Service.
Eliminating the federal share of unemployment benefits for millionaires would save $20 million in the next decade, the congressional researchers said in their report.
If you pay into the system then you are entitled to the benefits, no matter how much you make. Same rules for everyone.
Otherwise, welcome to California. I pay property taxes so that illegal immigrants’ kids can attend state-run pre-schools that turn away my kids because I make too much money. Fuck that.
Both the employer and employee pay into the system. So no, I see no problem with these people claiming their benefits. Otherwise, folks with incomes over a certain (high) limit should not be required to contribute to unemployment insurance.
Of course, the other side is the income redistribution argument. That is, rich people should pay more and receive fewer benefits because fuck you, rich guys. If rich people are taxed at a high rate to subsidize poor people, is unemployment “insurance” really different? It’s still a government program.
Though for me, cutting off unemployment insurance based on income is nearing the point where it becomes ridiculous…
Talk about penny-wise and pound-foolish; this is in no way a serious or credible means of addressing the deficit. They need to address the fiscal cliff!!
2400 millionaires received 20,000,000 dollars, that works out to about 8333.33 per millionaire. Hardly enough to pay for little Billy’s 30,000 pre-school bill. I’m not going to worry about it.
I don’t see this as a big issue. If people paid for unemployment insurance, they should get the benefits they paid for. And some of those may be non-millionaire spouses of million dollar earners/households, or children (probably not so many children).
To me, this seems like stretching to throw some mud.
And yeah, $20MM is a drop in the bucket, not really an issue.
^People didn’t pay for unemployment insurance. Their employer’s did (Except for the self employed). Probably some laid off investment bankers wanting extra cash for their dry cleaning. Greedy bastards!! I mean paying 15% effective tax rate is not enough, they still want to compete with the poor for the crumbs on the bottom.
This makes me fucking sick! The rich sons of bitches keep holding on to their fucking wealth. Nothing trickles down! Under Obama, there are more millionaires than ever before in US history. Proof that all this wealth trickles up !! While the poor and WORKING CLASS get Straddled with mortgage payments, medical bills and child care costs. Fuck this system. I SAY TAX THE HELL out of the millionaires and GREEDYIONAIRES. NO MORE CAPITAL GAINS TAXES! EVERY ONE PAYS THEIR FAIR SHARE!!! This whole bull shit about the rich reinvesting their wealth is all horse shit! Mit Robot will reinvest at 15% or at 35%…YOU KNOW WHY…BECAUSE HE WANTS MORE $, HE WANTS TO REMAIN RICH. Fuck the status co!.
@stormyhotel, all you’re doing is scape-goating. When the economy is bad, everyone looks for a scape-goat. Repubs scape goat is the poor, Dems scape-goats are the rich. None of it makes sense!
And before you Google NJ SUI and say that it’s disability insurance, NJ SDI is a separate deduction in my paycheck. To add insult to injury, I just work in NJ I don’t even live there.
