Am I wasting time on present position?

I am working as a full-time researcher in University. Most of my works are related to energy economy and economic modelling. Although current work environment is nice, like a family, I still want to move closer to finance industry rather than academia. It is hard, due to two factors: 1. Job market still weak; 2. I need visa sponsor. I received master degree in finance 3.5 years ago and expect to obtain CFA charter this June (CFA Institue has approved my work experience, what I need to do is accrue 4 more months). Is my work experience really helpful for my job hunting? Or employers just like fresh grads? What can I do to increase my exposure to job opportunities? Do not want to find myself far from finance when I am no longer young . Any light will be appreciated.
