Any suggestions?
I’m looking for some myself. No where to study in NYC…UGH
Go to NY public library on 5th and 40th. Go to the top floor to the main reading room. There must be at least 100 CFA students in there at any one time.
Hey madmike, is this true? I’m planning on heading out there tomorrow afternoon. Would you be so kind and confirm for me.
I go to nypl on 40th and 5th. Its probably the best place in manhattan to study unless you are a student or alumni at some school and can get access to a university library. The only drawback is that I feel there literally hundreds of legit crazy people that wander through the library during the day and if you get one that sits around you that starts making weird noises it can be distracting. Trust me it happens.
If you’re really in need of a place to study and don’t mind paying, you can join a college library as a “friend” by way of donation. Baruch College on 25th street b/t lexington and 3rd avenue charges $250 for the year. It’s pretty dead on Fridays/Saturdays and they’re open 7am - midnight 7 days a week. http://newman.baruch.cuny.edu/services/friends.html
Doods, I’ll tell you my secret that helped me poewr through level 1 and 2. I used to sneak into Kaplan on 56th street (might be 55th, forgot exactly) between 6th and 7th (or broadway) on the weekends (and I did this for my GMAT studying as well). If you right when they open, there will be a guy checking cards, but you can go a little later (say an hour after they open) and just walk right in. I used to go up to any floor and find any empty room - its pretty darn quiet there and I’d stay there pretty much all day on weekends. If you want, you can quikcly check the schedule which hangs right by the elevator while you wait. During the week, I tried to study at work (I was doing investment banking - so I always got off late anyway). FYI - I’m Asian so I could pass as one of those people going in for a medical test class or TOEFL. Just walk in like you belong there or know what you’re doing and they never ask questions, but just look for that card guy in the front - the dood who was there was a massive black man, impossible to miss even when walking by. If he’s not there, just go in, elevators will be right there to your right or you could take the stairs. When he was there, I’d just get coffee at Starbucks accross the street from Kaplan and come back in 15 to 30 minutes and he’d be gone. Seriously, the guy works part time. Best place to study in my opinion - rooms are quiet and you can literally just camp out all day. I used to stay there from like 10 AM to close. FYI - helps if you aren’t white…there were alot of asian and minoriites going in and out… Just check it out - you can make it work for you. Just be smart about it - plus, the more they see you, the more they think you belong there…I used to smile at the people behind the counter every once in awhile (or make eye contact and look really tired like I was sick of studying english) just so they remembered me. And once I was in, I was in - could even leave for lunch and come back.

Why go through all the trouble to sneak into Kaplan on weekends - why didn’t you just study in your work building? I’m sure you could have found an unoccupied office near your desk.

NYCAnalyst - honestly, your questions have nothing to do with my suggestion, so if you don’t want to take advice, then don’t, but don’t ask idiotic questions. 1. I was studying for the CFA because I wanted to. Happy? Do you think that all investment bankers do is make pitchbooks 24/7? I could appy the same logic: Why were you sleeping instead of making pitchbooks? 2. Work building had tons of distractions, and as you so aptly mentioned, I was banking so there was almost always someone there.
I was trying to do the library after work - the mid Manhattan library is open till 9 Mon-Wed. I would really like to try and get in somewhere that is open until 10 or something during the week. I even looked at Yelp and couldn’t really find anything.
