Assuming its a sell-side research associate position, 12 hour days are the norm with 16+ hours during earning season. For some reason companies of the same industry love to report at the same date/time. You are very likely to call in for your boss for some calls. Take good notes and learn to draft fast. Unless you landed a bulge bracket job, don’t plan to work for more than 2-3 years. Your boss will be the biggest hurdle to your career advance; he want you there to be a grunt doing all the real research while he does the selling (and telling you how the models are suppose to look like). I have seen some associates staying in the same position, did all the work and hope he can become an analyst someday. But as his boss retires the firm got a paratrooper from London to be his boss so he is stuck. Fortunately it’s a bulge bracket firm so the job is relatively stable and easy.
