Defense is definitely a large part of the issue for 2nd ammendment proponents. To your point, obviously there is a point where people need to decide what the limit is. If cars are for transportation, why can people own any car that goes above 90 mph in most states? So yes, there probably does need to be discussion about where that limit is (and there is a discussion).
But few things are more dishonest than the idea that assault weapons (again <3% of annual firearm homicides) really play a role in America’s gun violence problem.
Race is an easy metric to notice. And a ridiculous one at that. We are all of the same race. Ask any anthropologist. The idea is archaic. Check out the crime rates between blacks from households with a mom and dad and blacks born to a single mother. Continental decent is not the problem.
For those who are advocating a ban on assault weapons…could you please define “assault weapon”? How is an “assault” rifle inherently different from a “non-assault” rifle?
Culture’s still an issue. Even if you adjuste for income and single parent families, this is a stunning (and non coincidental statistic). There are an equal number of low or lower income single family non-black minorities but they do not even register as a drop in the pail against this stat. If you don’t recognize the full reality of the issue, then how can it ever be resolved?
This brings the thread full circle back to Trump’s role as a counterbalance to a PC culture that has suffocated constructive dialogue on real problems.
They just mean that we should limit the destructive power of weapons sold to civilians. The equilibrium point is up to discussion. You probably don’t want to sell nuclear bombs to the public. But a small gun for shooting targets maybe is ok. Where in the middle is the right policy? A gun that can kill 10 people easily? 50 people? 2 people?
Ok, but why are we spending 90% of our gun control discusion on weapons that contribute less than 3% of gun murders (closer to 2%)??? Particularly in light of the points I outlined regarding handgun control earlier.
Given the black youth unemployment in the 1950s was lower than whites and the black culture during the time was very patriarchal, something has changed. Why? The problems have grown with the welfare state…coincidence?
Thats kinda my point. Anybody who uses the term “military grade fully automatic machine gun assault rifle” to scare people into his way of thinking is probably using demagoguery instead of facts.
Because they get used in the mass shootings that everyone gets all fired up about. No one really gives a crap about the thousands of young black men who are gunned down every year (unless by a cop), but the less than 1% of shooting victims who are killed by mass shooters are tragic victims of the US’s gun-crazy society.
