I will be moving to New York to work as an analyst in midtown, and was considering Battery Park for apartments. They seem to be a little bit cheaper and more bang for the buck than what’s available in midtown. Anybody have any experience living in the area?
pretty boring area, completely dead at night and you’ll have a 40-45 min commute in the morning to midtown (i do this commute in reverse currently). if you care about having a nicer place over a fun location then go for it. you may wanna check out the UWS or UES though … you can probably get similarly decent prices, about the same commute, but the areas a bit more lively.
Battery Park is cold and touristy. I used to call it a residential airline terminal. It had that vibe. It’s fun to go have a picnic there every once in a while but I would NEVER live there. Also, never buy there as the maintenance fees on apartments there are out of this world. They do have good schools, though, especially for k-5. The grocery stores are expensive there, too. You have to walk out of it to find anything good. UES and UWS are more homey but more colorful hoods with NYC spirit are in the village, soho, e. village, downtown, etc.
Great for families, bad if you’re trying to get l@id on a Satuday night.

It doesn’t take 45 minutes from downtown to midtown, unless your taking a rickshaw. I come from way out in flatbush and it’s only 50 - 55 minutes. On that note, You should really consider Brooklyn. Much better neighborhood, plenty of stuff to do at night, but still close enough to the city to do anything you want there.

Oh, sorry, I meant “much better neighborhoods” better?
No, not really.
There are some really nice parts of brooklyn. Most of it sucks…

I used to live across the street from Battery Park (Financial District) and the commute from Wall St 4/5 train just to get to Grand Central was around 25 minutes (walking + waiting for train + train ride). Since he’ll have a further walk just to get to the subway + time to walk to the office and he’s look around a 45-50 min commute. It gets old real quick, especially when you’re going home after a long day. The night life does suck as mentioned by others. Bottom line is look elsewhere if you’re single
You are all haterz
There are 2 good things about Battery Park. (1) the movie theater there is never crowded. (2) the hudson park along the water. It’s one of the last places I’d like to live. Many parts of brooklyn are superior.

Ha ha! Brooklyn bashing! Humorous AND original.
when i see NYC threads about housing I always wonder if sh*tholes like wash heights or bed stuy are really that bad? I personally think rappers talk bad about those hoods inorder to get a rep. and also im a pretty grimey white guy, but i wonder will people attack me if im in a suit? because I know in london if i was kickin it in croydon or brixton (I like dnb and dubstep) yobbo’s would strait mob my ass
There’s nothing wrong with Battery Park – I have a couple friends that live there. It’s very residential; just know that you have to take the subway or cabs to get to places during the weekend. It’s not too far from Tribeca (which is where I live), and I think some might argue that Tribeca is equally quiet over the weekends. Personally that’s not a big deal - I like that it’s residential and that there are a lot of subways that stop there. Plus, I like to go out to have a good time but come back to a quiet home. I find that it’s very possible to do that in downtown Manhattan. Anyway, it all depends on your living preferences but I think Battery Park is a fine place. If I had to choose some other area in New York, I’d probably pick somewhere near Central Park, but I’m very happy with downtown.

Bed Stuy is still the hood even though the murder rate is down. Not some place I’d venture around with ostentatious bling in the middle of the night.
Too much dog poop on the UES
Too much dog poop ruins places!
East Village 4 Life until I pick up some kids then probably UES, maybe 740 Park like Steve S’s place - -
I live in Wash Heights and really like it now… and I am a white boy. The only BIG negative is the commute to east side is 50 mins door to desk - going crosstown sucks.
