Best Programming Language for Financial Modeling

Hello all, I am really wanting to get some financial modeling skills under my belt but am a little overwhelmed with the breadth of programming languages out there. Considering I am a beginner regarding programming languages, what is the easiest to learn and most useful for financial modeling? Many thanks!!!

nice try

Don’t you want to know which language would be most helpful to pull down Mega $$$?

If there is a language for printing money I guess I could start with that one…

engrish??

Hey, is someone hijacking my thread from http://www.analystforum.com/phorums/read.php?1,956661 ??? with a bit of a twist? I suppose this is a valid question though and I’ll put my two cents in. .01 = Visual Basic = Hello Excel - I mean obviously Visual Basic programmers are looked down upon but the fact of the matter is you can write a lot of code and “microsoft macros” that make workbooks amazing. .01 = C# - Although a bit more complicated, than VB, this language makes much more sense overall because once you learn it, you can actually get paid well for it. (And it is REALLY easy to get started making windows forms. I just mentioned that I was thinking about learning this and my IT mgrs are all so friendly to me.

If you’re a fundamental modeler, learning VBA is definitely valuable; probably more so than other languages. If you do fundamental modeling, you pretty much live in Excel. If you’re a quant modeler, you really need to know one of the C++ variants for programming, although Java can get you through in a pinch. MATLAB is also good if you are going to be more of a modeler than a pure programmer.
