The Journal had a really good article on the recent rise. Initial coin offerings fund tech startups and in exchange investors get the potential to buy that companyās products and services? I get the underlying blockchain tech has some real uses and could change the way we take records. However, this funding scheme seems like it will end badly when a few of these tech companies inevitably go belly up.
buddy of mine just last week sold 100k bitcoin for 100k ethreum. he still has a fuckton of bitcoin though. anyways, i think both are shitty. but he has made mad gains on this shit. like over a million.
basically i have a buddy who is not financially sophisticated (lacks a college degree, does nothing, literally just counts/collects cash) who made a lot of money on bitcoin through speculation. heās now speculating on ethereum. https://www.quora.com/Is-Ethereum-better-than-Bitcoin-Why-or-why-not
anyways its annoying because he essentially thinks heās a genius and talks about bitcoin going to 100k, and now heās giving me advice about ethereum.
I thought about buying some ethereum coins at the end of May ā and itās up around 60% since then. Now trading at around $262, so a tenth of the Bitcoin price. Could have much more upside but I am too risk averse to buy.
Iām having trouble finding any that actually make sense. So far, the only way anyoneās identity has been matched to bitcoins is if their public key can be linked directly to them. For example, if the FBI raids your house and finds the key to your wallet on a post-it note next to your computer, then youāre really up creek. Every transaction you ever made from that wallet (or public key) is stored in the blockchain and if other keys have been identified (e.g. a common wallet for The Silk Road) could be linked to your keyā¦youāre SOL. But, just think about that for a second. Youād still have to be pretty dumb to get caught and it would involve a law enforcement agency to physically find your key. If youāre that high up on their radar, using btc isnāt going to save you.
But purely by hacking? No, not unless you store your wallet/key on your HD, which would be very stupid. Thatās why everyone uses flash drives. The best protection against hacking is always going to be air.
Funny skimming through this thread and people are saying the same thing 4 years ago as todayā¦I like how this thread started in the year Bitcoin went down 90% (2014). Will we see prices at 2K then blast off to 200K in a couple years? I canāt wait until I can look back and see.
