"BlackBerry's profit beats expectations"

"Canada’s BlackBerry Ltd, reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings on Friday, as operating costs nearly halved, and said it expects to be profitable on an adjusted basis in 2018.

The company’s U.S.-listed shares were up nearly 5 percent at $7.29 before the bell.

BlackBerry has shifted away from making its once-iconic smartphones to building a software business, which includes mobile device management products and the QNX industrial operating system."

Sometimes, you just need to know when to let go.

I actually didn’t even know they still existed.

My expectations were they were going to be out of business. So, I guess any earning are good earnings huh?

I will say they made a smart move buying (or did they create it?) Good for Enterprise. The one thing BB still had over iPhones was security and the ability for an employer to wipe your company phone if you leave/get fired. Good takes care of these problems pretty well. It seems BB will hang on for a while yet.

I don’t know about you, but Good users in my company sign an agreement with fine print saying the company can seize and wipe any phone on which the application is installed. So, the company can confiscate personal phones as well. I don’t think most people here have read this or are aware of this rule…

^ My company pays my phone bill, so I had to consent to that anyway.

Samsung’s coming to take BB’s lunch:

"Iris scanning delivers a hundred times more secure security than a fingerprint and a more reliable security solution on your device.

“That coupled with the Knox solution, it [the Galaxy Note 7] is the most secure device you can have.”

Mine only pays my data coverage. Should I get fired, they just terminate my access to Good. Get to keep my phone.

^ I get to keep my phone, but they wipe it completely if I leave.

Even your photos and games and stuff? I’d hate to start over on Two Dots. I’m up to level 120.

That’s my understanding, a complete wipe.

BES plus all of the acquisitions they have made over the years means they are still a force to be reckoned with. their balance sheet is healthy, half a billion net cash. their phone business is basically moot but their enterprise software offering plus QNX being in more than 50 million vehicles means it will likely be around for quite some time and with some smart acquisitions in self-driving could become a contender once again.

i like the BB story. def lots of traction. wonder who is going to buy them out first

I hope someone writes the Jim Balsillie story one day. When he got denied from buying an NHL franchise at the peak of his net worth, he was quoted saying he would buy the entire league one day. He could barely buy the entire Arena Football League right now.
