people only care about relative well-being. it is likely that the UK will be much better off than their neighbors in Europe following a Brexit. all PIIGS nations are dead countries walking. it is conceivable that the UK could retake the leadership role from Germany once the EU falls apart and Germany is left holding hundreds of millions in incredibly junky Greek, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian debt. the UK just needs to hope the EU survives the next two years so that they get some decent exit terms. if the EU implodes before then, everyone loses a lot, including the UK.
In a Parliamentary system, you need the confidence of the house. Cameron had no more legitimacy, even among members of his own party. The International Community accepted the result, Cameron had no choice in the matter nor should he as he clearly lost his gamble.
This is absolutely false. The clarity act makes no mention of staying home equalling a stay vote. It talks about having a clear question and a clear majority, yet it never determines what constitutes a clear majority. Ironically, the Clarity Act isn’t too clear.
In any case, the International Community has always accepted a 50%+1 result. That wouldn’t change under an ambiguous Clarity Act.
As a side note, Newfoundland joined the Confederation with only 52% of the vote in their referendum back in 1948.
The Clarity Act is garbage. How can 48% (for example) of the voters hold the rest hostage? It makes no sense to award the win to the losers. Iceland only beat the English 2-1 today, but they should not advance because England is the status quo and they didn’t blow them out. What a dumb rule the Clarity Act is.
you guys are nuts. the clarity act is brilliant. its ambiguity means Quebec can never leave without a distinct majority. the majority of federally elected MPs are federalists so they would conclude that a clear majority would be necessary. the supreme court has stated that a clear majority is necessary as per the act. this has since been accepted to be 50% of the eligible voting population. quebec separatists can bitch and moan about fairness but 50% of the voting population in favour should be the absolute minimum to trigger independence. if you want change, go vote, if not, don’t vote. simple. why ask people to vote for status quo? it doesn’t make sense.
Frankly, yes. Don’t pretend that you don’t think you’re different from the common middle american man.
Scanning a news story about google searches and passing comment isn’t quite the same as turning up at polling booth to cast a vote without having any appeciation for what you’re voting for.
Leave voters aren’t immune to post fact politics either. One of the biggest news stories is centred around an interview with Farage on the morning after the referendum stating that the Leave campaign claim of £350m a week saved from the EU will go to the NHS wasn’t accurate, people neglect to mention or report that he wasn’t part of the Leave campaign and he never made such a promise. he’s still an odious toad faced hypocrite
The fear mongering by the politicians and those that are supposed to be informing the public is completely irresponsible. If any policy decision is presented without the positives and negatives being mentioned by an elected official or someone claiming to be a reporter, as opposed to an opinion writer, you might as well tune out the source. Britian will go on, regardless. Some good articles out there talking about how brexit could be extremely beneficial for some of their industry, autos being one of them.
