Books are definitely cheaper - check out Benninga and Damodaran for financial/valuation modeling. I think the programs just explain it step-by-step (easier to understand to some extent) which is why a lot of people use them. Damodaran has a million free resources on his website - look through everything there first and see if you still need further supplements.
