Calculating Real Rate of Return

Would it be incorrect to calculate the real rate of return using the same equation to derive the real interest rate when given nominal and inflation rates?

real interest rate = [(1 + nominal rate) / (1 + inflation)] -1

real rate of return = [( 1 + nominal rate or return) / (1 + inflation)] - 1

It would be correct. The calcuations are compatible.

But does CFAI require that?

I’ve seen them just subtract inflation from nominal return in the context of ips requried returns.
