Well go ahead and learn then. Here is an article discussing it from 1999 in the WSJ. When the East Indian Tea Company was a major influence in India the Indian elite wanted their kids to join that group of people. They sent them to schools w/ their children to learn Queen’s English. If you consider my grandfather’s friend was born in the 20s not many generations removed I think it should begin to make sense. Centuries of culture don’t disappear quickly. It didn’t take but a quick google search to find schools still practicising this:
And if you had bothered to read i think you would have found that i had mentioned this when i spoke about people who learn english along with their local dialect.
They are private schools and are there in vast numbers all over the country. If you look towards the right of that wiki page you’ll see something written "English Medium’ which is exactly what i told you. They differ from other schools that do not use ‘English medium’ because those schools use the local dialect as their ‘medium’.
They aren’t ‘British schools’. They are private schools that parents send their kids too if they can afford too but i suppose that doesn’t fit the weird brit narrative you’re trying to bring in.
This is 2014 dude, the brit’s are long gone and their legacy is neglegible apart from the railways and the postal service.
I’m not sure you quite grasp how diverse the country and people really are. But i’m sure with the large sample size you have of Indians of all descents you are well qualified to comment. Fair enough. i agree with you.
Ha Ha, See this i like, say what you really think.
I’m not really interested in what you think but i am quite mature and a happy chappy in real life and you could take my word or not. I’m also a product of 2 very different cultures- one Indian and one African and i had to go to a school filled with lebanese kids. I’ve learnt a lot about these cultures and they’ve shaped me in many ways.
However i have never met a culture or people as obnoxious and two faced as Americans. Not all- they are some very politically correct and very nice people here but some are borderline disgusting and since generalizations seem acceptable in American culture lets try this.
Americans wll say the most random shit that they have developed from their limited worldview and when someone tries to correct them they will turn around and say ‘You shouldn’t be so sensitive bro’ or ‘You really shouldn’t care for what people think of you’. Really? Thanks for the life lesson.
I could go on and on but when sept 11 happened, when students were pulled out of school and told for the first time that their father wasn’t coming home or they wouldn’t see their mom again there were stories about Europeans heckling American passengers at airports, There were reports of Arabs cheering on the streets, The iranis have a mural in their city centre that says ‘down with the USA’. Sure you could say it’s just the nutjobs or the jihadis but it’s much more than that isn’t it. You know that as well as i do.
Ask any poor man world over- where would you like to go to? He will say America, for the opportunity and for the chance. Ask him about Americans- You’ll get a wry smile and a shrug of the shoulder that speaks volumes.
Reading this forum it isn’t hard to see why. People will come out with the most snide shit ever that isn’t particlarly clever or original but raises the hackles.
That seems very reasonable. I am a brazilian (probably with an horrible accent) and looking at the video I could guess in 2 seconds that they were either from India or Pakhistan. I guess most of South America probably sounds somewhat closer in accent as well.
This is cool and normal. In the same manner, I’m sure most americans can’t pass for indians, no matter how hard they practice it. And even the almighty bchad probably can’t pass for a brazilian.
On a related note, a few days ago I checked some american accent trainer on YouTube (maybe I got the link from here). This guy trains americans to lose their accents when speaking portuguese and a few other languages. He sounded pretty good, and yet it was easy to tell he isn’t a brazilian from the way he pronounces his “s, c and z”. Such small things make a difference, and it’s very hard for non-natives to pick on them.
And Isildurr, seriously, take it easy man! You’re sounding borderline racist, to say the least. In the same way India has many different subcultures, so does the US. And, as in any country, there will be a bunch of obnoxious people. You seem to be going too far after Ohai (not american) and especially using people who celebrate thousands of random deaths as a data point.
I don’t think those dudes jumping around when random people die are the most reasonable and unbiased people in the world. It’s akin to some US group celebrating the 2005 Tsunami. There was probably a couple idiots doing this somewhere, but you don’t want to relate to those people.
It is also common for people to, reasonably or not, develop hatred towards richer countries. Here in Brazil, some people hate the US because it somehow must be exploring us or whatever. In Bolivia, some people hate the brazilian “empire” for the same reason. I’m not familiar with social trends in your region of the world, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some parts of Nepal or Bangladesh have developed similar feelings towards India.
I’m not really interested in having rational conversation with the kind of people who will pass a snide comment like “I wonder what she smells like” and then pussy out on an anonymous internet forum saying ‘i was talking about her perfume’.
Sure you were , at least say what you think in the open. Or people who seem to think generalizations are ok when they are borderline ignorant and then say you should laugh at it. Err, i’ll laugh at things which aren’t offensive thank you very much.
As for the disdain people have world over for Americans exceeds just being a rich country. The ‘culture’ is drab, vain and if this forum is a reference obnoxious to the point of being laughable.
They look for reasons why their kids are blowing themselves up, In such a hypercharged society of testosterone where there is no room for tact and sensitivity is there really any wonder?
But whatever, match is over…have a nice day. This wasn’t really directed at you Crazy. See you in the footy thread.
Well, there’s the rub. It is literally impossible for you to offend me or my circle of Americans. Call our mothers whores. Tell me my sister stinks. “Disrespect” me. I couldn’t care less. That is liberty. Hope you find it one day…And tell me what the World would look like without “Americans”?..The World’s largest export is American culture. It’s coming, good or bad. Are you ready?
That isn’t liberty. The basic definition of liberty is being able to do what you want. You not caring about what i say is nowhere near what liberty is.
Like i said i don’t know any culture or people that will pass of a generalization and expect you to laugh at it. Not until they know you well. So some of you either don’t do this in real life and feel free to do it behind the mask of anonymity which makes you a two faced shithead or you are like this in real life which makes you a prick.
As for American culture, it already exported itself to the world a long time ago.
