Chrystia Freeland’s grandfather Mykhailo Chomiak was Ukrainian and allegedly `spent the war working for German military intelligence as the editor of an influential Ukrainian newspaper celebrating Hitler and promoting a virulent form of antisemitism. ’
I’m not really seeing the connection between Chrystia Freeland’s grandfather and the U.S. trying to coerce Denmark to give up Greenland
Canada’s Freeland Says She Will Form Nuclear-Armed Alliance Against Trump
“The US is turning predator, and so what Canada needs to do is work closely with our democratic
allies, our military allies. I would start with our Nordic partners, specifically Denmark who is also being
threatened, and our NATO European allies. I would be sure that France and Britian were there who
possess NUCLEAR WEAPONS and I will be working urgently with these partners to build a closer
security relationship that guarantees our security in a time when United States can be a threat.”
the Resistance is trying to bomb Tesla dealerships
Woman caught trying to plant explosive devices at Tesla dealership
The accused was a woman and ABC News has used the photo of a man for some reason. Pretty careless.
added: talking about ABC and careless, the ladies on The View were discussing Elon Musk:
Joy Behar falsely claimed on the View today that Elon Musk supported apartheid in South Africa.
Musk was born in South Africa to a South African father and Canadian mother. His father was elected to the Pretoria City Council as a representative of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party and has said that his children shared their father’s dislike of apartheid. Musk applied for a Canadian passport through his Canadian-born mother to avoid South Africa’s mandatory military service, which would have forced him to participate in the apartheid regime.
Defamation of public figures in the US is governed by a court case, NYT v Sullivan (1964). To succeed, a public figure must not only prove the normal elements of defamation—publication of a false defamatory statement to a third party—but must also prove that the statement was made with “actual malice”, meaning the defendant either knew the statement was false or recklessly disregarded whether it might be false. In the right-hand clip, Joy Behar admits that she doesn’t know if what she just said was true or not, so would that be `reckless disregard’?
There’s some unbelievable anti-immigrant bigotry in the clip.
Behar bemoans that “the guy was not born in this country.”
She calls him “this foreigner, foreign agent,” and “enemy of the United States.”
She was shocked to find out that Musk is a naturalized U.S. citizen, then questions if he came legally.
at least Zelenskyy didn’t wear this to the Oval Office or this
President got testy when Zelenskyy asked for more free stuff
So does this mean Trump is now following Biden’s lead? Or that he was wrong to accuse Biden of being naïve and easily manipulated?
Zelensky should’ve worn these pants, after all he is the one sitting there still after 3 years of war - something to think about when people laugh at the man in tights.
“Gloria mundi transitoria est” – Zelensky is likely one of the very few leaders today who would have stayed in Kyiv in March 2022. He hasn’t been perfect and has certainly made mistakes, but being mocked by a group of armchair warriors through the media is just another symptom of the pussification of society.
Just amazed at the unequal treatment of Biden and Trump by the media.
When Zelenskyy refused for what the third time to sign the minerals pact that had been agreed, it made global news.
When Biden lost his temper with Zelenskyy after Zelenskyy wanted still more free stuff, the media barely mentioned it.
This is how FDR and Churchill dressed when they went to visit Uncle Joe in Yalta (Crimea) in Feb 1945.
And this is how Zelenskyy dressed when he met Trump at the United Nations in NYC in 2019
Zelenskyy says he is wearing the cargo pants out of solidarity with the millions of men he has sent to their deaths, but they weren’t wearing cargo pants.
Added: there’s a new poll out.
52% of Americans support Ukraine in the war
4% support Russia
44% support neither, and it’s that 44% which is the MAGA base
The level of support is surprisingly high. I’ve never quite understood why wars in distant countries tend to garner such strong backing in the U.S. My grandfather, a ww2 vet, had a theory: only those whose collective memory lacks firsthand experience of war on their own soil can view war as some heroic adventure. Given how much the military is celebrated in the U.S., this likely holds at least some truth.
Anywho, Jeff Sachs delivered a pretty seething speech about 'Merican imperialism in the EU parliament a few days ago:
JD Vance’s ‘eyeliner’ steals the spotlight during interview as viewers beg for his makeup routine
Is it correct to state that we’re being lectured about conservative and “common sense” values by men who have had multiple wives (Trump: 3, Musk: I’ve lost count) with whom they’ve had more kids than the average ghetto baby daddy (Trump: 5, Musk: 13 or 14*). All this backed by a man who very likely wears make up.
O tempora, o mores!
*Musk hasn’t publicly claimed the baby
I thought for a moment that the EU had come to its senses, but sadly not.
Sachs was speaking at an event entitled “The Geopolitics of Peace”, hosted by former UN Assistant Secretary General and current BSW MEP Michael von der Schulenburg, on February 19, 2025.
Presumably this was in a committee room or seminar room rather than the main chamber as there are 720 MEPs and the room in the video wouldn’t be able to hold that many people.
According to wiki, BSW is a political party in Germany founded on 8 January 2024. It has been described as left/far-left with populist and nationalist tendencies.
The BSW is skeptical of green politics, criticizes support for Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian War, and holds Eurosceptic and anti-American views on foreign policy. It combines socialist economics with elements of cultural conservatism or social conservatism on social issues.
The Old Left.
Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht – Vernunft und Gerechtigkeit, which is translated as the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice.
The reception would have been very different if Sachs had been addressing the full EU parliament.
A lot of what Sachs says is actually in agreement with Trump, even if Sachs doesn’t realize it.
Trump’s base is the Old Right and they’ve wanted the US to leave NATO since the end of the Cold War. They expected a “peace dividend” at the end of the Cold War, which they didn’t get. One of the slogans of the Old Right is “A Republic Not An Empire”, the title of a book by Patrick J Buchanan. The neocons have said that America is an Empire now. Buchanan worked for the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations but conservatives (as opposed to neocons) were not welcome in either Bush I or Bush II. Buchanan challenged Bush I in 1992, running on the twin issues of opposition to the Gulf War and opposition to the Bush tax hike.
A week or 2 ago, Trump proposed that the US, Russia, and China all cut defense spending by 50%, a proposal I welcome.
Putin has said he would be receptive to that, but sadly China is not.
Putin backs Trump’s proposal for US, China and Russia to halve defense spending
The argument of the Old Right has long been that the continued existence of NATO makes war more likely rather than less likely as NATO seeks to justify its continued existence.
Ahh me too. I thought it was in front of the full EU parliament and I was hopeful that times are finally changing. I was wondering that how did someone like Sachs manage to sneak to the podium
Anyhow I think the speech was good but a little black and white. Kudos for critical analysis of US foreign policy, call for European autonomy, diplomacy instead of military escalation and ostracism of Russia.
What I didn’t like was the one-sidedness of the speech and the oversimplifications. It takes two to tango and painting US/NATO as almost exclusively responsible for global conflicts is kind of sophomoric imo. I also find the underestimation of other actors’ agency pretty strange (this is very typical in these kinds of viewpoints); Poland, the Baltics and Ukraine “turning” westward is always seen as a result of some “brainwashing” etc, not due to some legitimate security concerns stemming from shared history with Russia. What has Russia done wrong that there even is a question about whether to belong to “west”?
The wanna-be-Julius Cesar from France has some Napoleonic ambitions.
Macron proposes French nuclear extension, Ukraine troop deployment in case of ceasefire
Zelensky has made mistakes and is far from perfect, but the way he is mocked by the conservative block is surprising.
America has long had a strong military tradition, valuing its soldiers and understanding the realities of war. Many veterans must feel embarrassed watching Trump demand gratitude from Zelensky for U.S. support—regardless of Zelensky’s missteps.
Trump and Vance seem to have misjudged Zelensky, assuming they could pressure him into signing a shady mineral deal with little resistance. It would be cool to know what Reagan would think of all this.
Western leaders are losing trust in transatlantic cooperation at lightning speed. Germany is finally taking action and preparing for a pivot.
The U.S. is already struggling to contain China’s growing power—alienating its natural allies hardly seems like a 4D chess move.
This just in from Reuters
“Analysts say Beijing wishes to exploit the growing transatlantic rift to bolster its ties with European countries, which have been strained over Ukraine and trade tensions.
“China still has confidence in Europe, and believes Europe can still be China’s trusted partner,” Wang said.”
My understanding is that Zelenskyy was at the White House specifically to sign the deal and that he had agreed ahead of time that he would sign it. There was supposed to be a signing ceremony followed by lunch.
This was the third time he had agreed to sign the deal and then failed to.
The Treasury Secretary had been sent to Kiev (I think they said a 10 hour train ride from Warsaw).
They tried again at the Munich Security Conference with Vance and Rubio (Sec State).
Then the White House.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick (ex Cantor Fitzgerald) explains what happened:
Zelenskyy has again said he will sign the deal

Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be.
It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future
cooperation and communication to be constructive.Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it in any time and in any
convenient format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security
guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively.
My point was this. Zelensky and Ukraine are back against the wall and pretty much dependent on the US continued support while the brave new US administration comes in and starts demanding payment/ransom. History will tell us how this all plays out. A critical observer could make an argument that the general goodwill, trust and mutual goals that the US has created in the West after ww2 is going up in flames. The geography is not on the US`s side when in comes to the trade triangle between Asia, USA, Russia and Europe.
The EU has a short memory.
Obama had a spat with them when the lovely Victoria Nuland famously said f@ck the EU during the 2014 coup in Ukraine.
The future (1953-1961) President Eisenhower was the first NATO supreme commander.
In February 1951, shortly after assuming that post, he wrote:
“If in 10 years, all American troops stationed in Europe for national defense purposes
have not been returned to the United States, then this whole project [NATO] will have failed.”
74 years later, the Cold War has been over for 34 years, and US troops are still stationed in Europe.
Anyhoo, Canada has a new Governor. Art Carney won the election to replace Justin.
151,899 Canadians voted. The latest estimate is that 41,465,298 people live in Canada so 0.366% of the population picked the new Governor.
I don’t think we know how many of the 151,899 who voted voted for Carney as they have a complicated electoral process and don’t seem to have released the raw data.
Sadly, Chrystia didn’t win this time. A la prochaine.
Thank you Gavin for your common sense!
It is just absurd how big this whole discussion has become. Very, very few people are transgender but based on how much headlines it creates, one could think that transsexuality is much more prevalent.
