Canadian job Market

toronto is competitive normally, but in this economy, competition to get a front office job is at a new high point… frankly, if you don’t have a CFA/MBA (insert good school) OR gold plate ivy league (harvard, Wharton, MIT) type education OR gold plate work experience (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citadel, etc.) OR connections OR prior front office experience with arguable evidence that you weren’t the bottom 10% that got cut, you can forget about getting an interview 9/10 times. throw in the influx of brand name talent repatriating themselves to canada, a simpleton GTA joe CFA bloke is just not going to cut it for a front office opportunity unless it is for a tier 3 firm, that said you may have a shot at processing settlements in a mutual fund middle office which just goes to show 1) how inanely competitive Toronto is for CFA grads, and 2) how ludicrously spoiled Toronto firms are as for montreal, just as competitive as toronto, also forget about it if you are not francophone calgary - not as tightly wound as Toronto on qualifications, but in this market with calgary lay offs creeping up, need oil & gas finance experience to make it happen vancouver? good luck, not going to happen word of advice, for a meaningful career in finance, go elsewhere ie. china, india, etc. etc.

My friend, this is a crazy coincidence : - I am Canadian - I did learn German - I did move to Germany - I did find a decent job there !!

I was unemployed in Vancouver for 11 weeks this year. I did 250 resumes without a single callback.

You didn’t send me one

True no barriers to entry on the retail side. Education matters less that selling skills on that side. But you would be shocked by the number of brokers and wholesalers that have their MBA and or CFA.

Get in touch outside the board? I obviously have questions I’d love to ask if you don’t mind. The awkward sentence to hide the email address from spambots is below. “Spammersaway” at the domain that google uses. You know at gmail dot com. Yes. “Spammersaway” really is the email address. Let me know if you do decide to get in touch by replying, so I can check my spambox too.

But don’t hang your head and cry, stick in there. What are your plans now that you must have send resumes to every department in every bank in V.BC.? Are you gonna relocate or stay in the place and pursue another career?

I missed your reply, but was re-reading this thread because I posted it in another thread. Finding a job in Europe is not working out. It’s brutal over there too. I’m looking at applying to some grad. schools in Europe for 2010 because I’d really like to live in Europe.

Not to mention the extreme snobbishness of T. for the social scene…most T dotters think their sh!@ doesn’t stink --> most of the time you have to be on your A++ game to hookup; the NYC social scene is much more relaxed even with the extreme wealth floating around here.

Why did you move to Toronto from NYC in the first place.

Very young and parents were transferred to Toronto.

I’d like to know why moving to "…Vancouver…one of the few places my girlfriend can work. " What is it your gf does that she can only work in Toronto? Does she have a work visa from her company? Does she belong to the mafia and they shipped her there to work?

Either your said game is pretty pathetic or your Fugly. Toronto/GTA as a city has a very diverse selection of women relative to most other cities in the world and most of them are pretty down to earth . The ones that arent are wannabe kardashians, paris hiltons that you would’nt want to waste time over anyways .
