Canadian job Market

I’m a June 09 LI candidate; I am enjoying the study and feel it is great for the brain (maybe not the stress though). I am moving to Canada this winter as my girlfriend is Canadian. Can’t wait to get out of Ireland (depressing sh*thole). It would be great to continue my CFA in the financial capital of Canada- Toronto; however I am moving to Vancouver. What is the job market like there. Is there opportunities for equity research or any interesting front office roles? I have been looking but it seems like a lot of retail selling nothing-in-particular In the long run maybe it would be interesting to build up a relevant east coast exchange like the Pacific Exchange was; maybe leverage the link between Asia/US Any thoughts?

D’oh! I meant West coast. You know- the one on the left. 2Pac country.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the job market in Vancouver for Research / Portfolio Mgt is completely DEAD right now. I haven’t so few positions posted or available in as long as I can remember (several years). And by few I mean zero.

Didn’t Vancouver even shout down its Stock Exchange? The only times I rmemeber Vancovuer made headlines in the financial business was when another small broker fraudster lost his licence. But anyway, how is the job market in Vancouver outside the financial business?

Yes. The VSE is now part of the CDNX. To the OP: You should have stayed in the UK and tried to get a job in London or anywhere in the EU. Why would anybody want to move to BC from Europe? Cost of living is too low in Europe? Too many sunny days in Italy? Too much good food in Europe? To agree with the above poster, about the only thing that happens out in Vancouver security related is when another broker loses his license because of fraud. You may have to move to Calgary.

There are a few places in Vancouver like CC&L or PH&N who have a team of CFA`s pushing numbers for them. Not sure if they are hiring. There is a bunch of small firms around too but I think its mostly retail sales.

Not exactly accurate. Vancouver is actually a fairly significant centre for high net worth wealth management. Very rich people love it here. They need their money managed.

Of course, it’s all Hong Kong druglord money, but hey - it still needs to be managed, right?

As far as Vancouver and its financial market goes, you have tons of retail level and personal wealth management opportunities. Yes it is true as someone mentioned tons of wealthy people out here which makes for great opportunity for personal wealth management not corporate. There are always Financial Planning and advising roles available with retail banks in Vancouver. Pay is not great and not much room for moving from there to corporate world. If you want to do equity research or work in the corporate finance side of things your best bet would be TO but then right now even TO is dead. Unfortunately under normal circumstanced you may get 1 position in Corp. Finance in Vancouver and right now maybe 1 per year. For that one position you have over 100 applicants whom typically have way more experience than a typical CFA L1 or even L3 candidate. In short, basic rule of supply and demand over here on the west coast of Canada. Sorry to give you bad news but it’s the reality out here at the moment.

True about Europe- it is a great place. But it has its own problems like language barriers, bureaucracy etc. Believe me I know noone moves to Vancouver to further their career in financial markets; but it is one of the few places my girlfriend can work. Private wealth planning/mgmt sounds good. From what I know those guys are not really as respected as say prop traders. But it does sound easier. I will certainly start off tending bar and see what way the land lies. Thanks for all you input; its nice to get some confirmation on what I thought (the place is a bit stagnant financially), cos the market loves certainty.

Calgary is in not-so-great shape right now. A lot of firms looking for industry experience (oil and gas).

Oxymoron?

Can someone please post about the legal rules for non-citizens? How hard is to get a work visa?

DanLieb Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Can someone please post about the legal rules for > non-citizens? How hard is to get a work visa? Varies country-to-country. Australians/UK/Ireland can get about a year visa (non-extendable, have to leave country at end). To emigrate as a skilled worker the visa takes about 2-3.5 years. to get sponsored by a Canadian relative takes about 5 months. If a Canadian firm hires you, they must supply evidence to authorities there is no canadians able to fill the role, then takes about 6 months for visa.

Same thing as in Europe. Anyways, forget canada for finance. Unless you belong to an extremely small minority of finance graduates/CFA candidates, you’ll end up selling mutual funds to retail customer. Don’t know how you see your career, but you don’t need a CFA for such low-level crap.

You don’t even need a university degree. This is the truth about the Canadian market right now. I’m leanring German and trying to get a job over in Europe now. It’s not working out.

Thanks for the replies. kinda wish I was still single so that I could fck off over to Shanghai or Hong Kong, as was my original plan. boom_or_bust Wrote: > >You don’t even need a university degree. >This is the truth about the Canadian market right now. The finding a job in Europe? best of luck anyway and I hope you make it over here; the EU needs all the brain drain it can suck up.
