Thats what I was trying to say. I think you are misinterpreting the word “broke” not as in broken, as in penniless. To spend all your discretionary income on a car is pretty farking stupid. However, if you spend 20% of your income on lodging it would make sense…At least at my income level.
I think people are just confused by what you’ve posted, Nuppal. First you post ranges that you say are what you think works. Saying that people who make < 50K should ride the bus and people who make slightly more should buy used Beemers. People criticize your ranges as not making sense for what people in those income brackets should spend on a car. You say you agree and that it’s bad to be car-poor and that you don’t think it makes sense to spend too much on a car. Schizo much?

I admit the first range was supposed to be slightly humorus. I usually dont post something without trying to be funny/sarcastic. If you’re making 100K in NYC it still makes sense to take the Bus/Metro. When I was working LA I took the bus b/c it was just cheaper. Also, I think that buying a used car holds a lot more merit than some people on this board are giving it. For istnace, lets say you buy a used Honda Civic for 5k, paid in full. Then you have NO car payment to worry about super low insurance premiums, negligible gas bills, which all add up over time. Also, a lot of people are only limiting their though to my car/income ranges. a BMW 3-series may not make sense for someone making 50,001/year but is more than reasonable for someone making 75,000 a year.
Okay, that all makes sense. I agree with you about the used car argument. From a financial perspective, it makes sense to let someone else take the bulk of the depreciation hit for the first couple of years. Incidentally, I have never really gotten people who lease. I get that part of it is they always want a car that is pretty new. My neighbors lease a minivan. They recently concluded one lease and started a new one. When they turned the car in after like 3 years, they got ripped to shreds by various charges. They have 3-year old twins and a 7 year-old, so the interior had some scrapes/stains but was in generally good shape. Now they are leasing another one and I swear I see them vacuuming it out like every fricking weekend. I feel like saying, “Dudes, just buy one!”

In my eyes. Leasing = Financial Abortion

I think a lot of this has to do with how people define the utility from cars, houses etc. Most of the people here could afford to drive BMWs and Porsches if they absolutely wanted to. However, different people have different priorities - student loans, house payments, private school for their kids, etc. Maybe nuppal believes that a more expensive car will give him more happiness than a nice house, etc. Who are we to question his definition of utility? It is worth mentioning, however, that housing is the largest expense for most people. So if someone has no rent or mortgage to pay, it’s not surprising that he or she would have a lot of disposable income.
nuppal Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >I am pretty sure face to face you > wouldn’t have the balls to say that to me. Are you kidding me! I go 6’3 240+. Got fitted for suits last week – I can’t fit into a suit regardless of tailoring and have to go with seperates. My proportions are as follows: Jacket Size : 50 inches Arms lenght: 37 Neck: 18 Waist: 37 I’m not just a big awkward guy. I played college football (not D1 but still pretty good) as a tight end and I can still move a little bit. On top of that, I had a lot of violence issues as a kid. I came up thru Philly public schools (You went to a prep school, right?) and basically got into fights for pleasure. And how did I turn myself around? Oh yeah, US Army combat arms active duty. So, yeah – I would have no problem saying that to your face
Where does the Acura TL fit in all this?

I mentioned earlier that I regularly compete with my car, thus proving that it has higher marginal utility than someone who commutes to work, simply using their car as a method of transportation. In which case having a Prius/Civic/Corolla makes the most sense. I don’t drive my car on the commute to work. I take the motorcycle (can’t beat 50MPG) or the bicycle. Like I said before. It’s absolutely bonkers to see how much some people down here spend on their cars when you find out what they do/how much they make.
