Career advice from operations to portfolio mgmt?

Hey guys, Looking for some career advice… My Background: - B.S. Finance from a SUNY school - 2 Yrs experience in manufacturing firm analyzing markets and business finances - 1 Yr. experience in high end boutique investment firm - back office data/ops - 6 Months in a reconciliation/ops role at same investment firm - Working on CFA Level 1 Goal: To get into a portfolio management role either directly making investment decisions or helping to support the decision making process. Any suggestions on next moves or roles to look into? I have some ideas but curious what others might suggest or seen others do. Thanks!

What about MO or risk management?

Both sound interesting. What would be some MO tittles to aim for? would P&L work qualify? Is fund accounting still back office? With risk mgmt, are we talking credit risk mgmt? Seems companies are really focusing on who they lend to after 2008, I would think credit risk is growing.

It depends on firm you’re working for and what their main service offerings are. In the banking industry, credit risk is omnipresent. If you’re talking hedge funds/mutual funds, market risk and counterparty risk would probably be higher in the pecking order.
