Career Development

Feel a little bit frustrated. I passed CFA level III in this June. Most of my works are related to energy economics, but I want to jump into portfolio management or equity research. Supposed there is a strong demand for CFA charterholders or members. But so far I cannot see a lot of hopes. All investment companies want the position candidates have 5-7 related work experience (e.g. portfolio management, SAS). This issue looks like the hen and egg problem: if I do not have related work experience I cannot land a position, if I cannot land a position I cannot accumulate work experience. BTW, I have a master of finance degree and am younger than 30. How can I move closer to my dream position? Everything needs a start! Any light shed will be appreciated.

First, develop better communication skills.

lol I hope you don’t write your emails the same way as this post. I think the answer to your question is 10% unemployment most of which stems from finance industry. You’ll have to find another type of job that allows you to build skills needed for the job you want and wait for you lucky chance. Also consider more education, either MBA from a top school or a PhD. Lastly consider why you want to do PM or equity research because pay will change going forward. Until we have another finance bubble, it’s going to be really tough to break into the industry and have those fat paychecks.

Hahaha… You have some brutal communication skills!

Thank you, CFA=NOLIFE. I think your view is correct. The economic slack is one reason. And I will consider your suggestion: there may be no driect flight for me to get to my dream position. Furthering education would be an option, but I have to take a lot of time to take care of my child. Another degree may require me to invest too much energy and time. And thank other repliers for your directness. My comminication skills probably not bad, but my communication skills in English does need to improve. Speaking different languages and even many dialects every day is not very easy to me.

Given that you are not a first-language english-speaker, your emails are not bad! The market is tough. Even strong resumes don’t get much attention if they don’t have a lot of DIRECT experience. You just have to keep plugging every option/networking opportunity that you can.

I met a guy who just graduated from Chicago Booth in June, the guy is SMART, already has his Charter and was doing equity research before B-School. He could NOT land a job this year. In fact, he said there were 20 guys looking for investment management, only 1 guy landed a full time offer. He ended up working as an intern at a family office and said he has ended up applying to jobs he could have gotten before B-school. The job market is a complete crap shoot.
