CFA candidate?

If you have passed all 3 exams, but lack the experience are you still a CFA candidate?

nope.

I always thought a candidate was someone enrolled for the next exam however it’s a little ambiguous on the CFAI website. http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/faq/faqs_general.html###candidate What is a candidate? A candidate is a person enrolled in the CFA Program. Is a person no longer in the program if they pass the 3 exams, but lacks the experience? If that’s the case then the CFA program is only about the 3 exams.

Jonny, you’re a candidate only while enrolled for an upcoming exam or awaiting the results of an exam you’ve just taken. If you pass all three exams but lack the work experience to become a regular member, then my understanding is that you can become an Affiliate Member until you’ve satisfied the work experience criterion. http://cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/faq/faqs_candidates.html##7 http://cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/charterholder/membership/member_types.html Please correct me if I’m mistaken.

So the CFA program is only made up of the 3 exams and doesn’t include the other requirements that are part of becoming a CFA charterholder. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, you are a CFA Charter-Pending Candidate.

How about “CFA Level 3 Graduate”?

IF you pass level 3 and pay the dues, you are an affiliate member

you can only say that you’ve completed the CFA Program (and if you applied for the charter, that you are awaiting it)

In any event, I’m going commit a sin of omission and allow my employer to continue to include me as a CFA candidate in their marketing materials. It’s much simpler for them to say 10 CFA Candidates rather than 9 CFA Candidates and one CFA Institute affiliate member.

You’re a CFA 3.9 (or a 2.9 if you’re under the old 3-year work experience requirements). It’s difficult to write in Roman numerals, but I used: CFA III.IX and the CFA Institute approved it.

“If you have passed all 3 exams, but lack the experience are you still a CFA candidate?” Stupid question, period. Willy

Covered in excruciating detail in ethics book. You have to say something like “have completed all requirements for CFA Charter except for work experience” or something like that. But can’t claim to be “CFA”.
