With regime changes, there will usually be instability in the short term. However, in the long term, there are some foundations for future democracy. Without Chavez, the ruling party will be forced to go down a more moderate path. The country is oil rich, so under the right circumstances, they have the potential to prosper economically.

Of course, there is the problem of the state owning everything. Apparently, Chavez nationalized over 1000 companies during his regime. State owned enterprises are prone to corruption. Without Chavez’s oversight, many small time politicians will operate unchecked.

In addition, there is a strong reliance on social welfare - there were riots at some point in the 1980s when the government introduced austerity measures. So, the new government will likely resort to cash giveaways to increase its popularity. If spending becomes uncontrolled, Venezuela’s borrowing costs will increase. This is a particular problem in countries which have a history of bad credit.

Anything can happen, but hopefully, it will work out ok…
