Chicago Opportunities

Anyone know of any opportunities or good recruiters in the Chicago area? Potentially making a move to the area soon. Definitely appreciate any help. Also where is the best place to rent in the city? Thanks

I live in Chicago. As far as rent, it depends what you are looking for. Close to downtown/expensive: Goldcoast Expensive/cool/yuppyish: Oldtown, Lincoln Park Hot neighborhood: Bucktown, Wicker Park Lakeview: Drunk college girls spilling into the streets after downing 50 beers at a cubs game Roscoe Village: Just west of lakeview, cool neighborhood, more quite, 25 -35 yr old crowd, some with families Lincoln Square: North of Lakeview. I’d say that this is a growing spot. Best place to buy right now if you ask me. let me know if you want more specifics. your best bet is to go to www.chireader.com and search apartments. don’t use an apartment service as all of the ads are already on the reader and its cheaper if you go straight through the owner.

You can email me at xsellside at gmail dot com

Thank you guys. I might email you soon XSellSide.

chireader is a good source, but I much prefer craigslist. I also agree with sacko on the hoods. West Loop is also nice, but there aren’t really any grocery stores or schools. Lots of new lofts. South Loop is coming around, but with a similar bent to the West Loop. Just don’t go too far south. Those two neighborhoods are obviously in close proximity to the Loop, where you would likely be working. I used to live in Wicker Park, and loved it. It’s pretty close (via the Blue Line - about 10-15 minutes) to downtown and there is always something going on there. Now we live in Roscoe Village (2 miles north), and it is quieter, but still has a lot of nice restaurants and bars. The Brown Line from there takes about 35-45 minutes to get to the Loop; however, and is under construction, so is quite a PITA. I’ve been riding my bike and it takes me 30 minutes door to door, but I also ride a few extra miles to get over to the Lakeshore path. For jobs, any website (craigslist, monster, efinancialcareers, etc.) are a good place to start. Or look up some of the firms located here and search their websites for openings. I’m not sure about recruiters here, but I’m sure someone else on the forum has had good luck.

I am looking for job in Chicago too. I have recently posted my resume online, and all I get is credit risk or marketing analyst calls. I just appeared for Level 1, and am trying to get into an asset management or portfolio analyst type of role. I work for a bank, and am trying to get anything internally, but looks like all openings are on freeze right now. Does anyone have any ideas about Finance/management consultant position openings around Chicago ? Xsellside can I also email you ??

Go for it! I know a few headhunters that might be able to help you out.

Chicago does have quite a few good headhunters that are great to use in Chicago for finance only. I would like to chime in that Logan Square is a fabulous place too, just outside of trendy Bucktown, but more reasonably priced and 25 min to downtown on the blue line. I lived in Lincoln Square 5-6 years ago and HATED it. The commute can be up to an hour. It makes me laugh that the area is so hot, I don’t get it.

Thank you very much xsellside. I’ll email you tonight. Amber- How do you go about finding headhunters ? any directions ? I have my resume on monster, careerbuilder, analyticsrecruiting etc. (I got first job through college recruiting, and thats why I have so many naive questions about websites, headhunters etc.

All comments are definitely appreciated.

I still get emails from Brokerage Consultants (that is all that I remember about them), they are always “do you know someone who…” and they are entry level, but I think they were pretty good when I first moved here.

amber - I’ve actually got leads on higher up jobs from BC.

Hey does anyone know any good recruiters in the Chicago area that I can work with or of any opportunities in the area? I’m looking for asset management roles, or research roles, (hedge funds-asset management shops and the such) I’m looking for something that is entry level to 2-4 years experience. Also, I’m looking for the recruiter to help assess the market (Yes I know it is awful but I would like to see what I can get, how marketable I am and what is my market val) and get some help on the resume. -Thanks

I live currently in humboldt park, its pretty cheap but wicker park is spilling over so its becoming more expensive. Its also kind of rowdy, if you know what i mean. To be honest, logan square is really underated, you get landlords that rent really beautiful homes, include utilities and its dirt cheap. I reccomend that area if youre looking for a nice spot, plus there is a train line right around (the blue line) which goes straight to downtown. In my opinion, Lincoln Park is kind of like a drunk neighborhood, like Wrigleyville/Lakeview But as you go more inside the neighborhood away from the popular streets like Clark/Halsted/Lincoln they tend to quiet down and its still decently priced. As far as the job opportunities goes; youre better off listening to these guys cause im just as confused as you are. But im in a completely different situation i feel like. My question to you Chicago Vets out there is: Whats a good way to get started? That is, meeting interesting people i can relate with (ie, networking), and really just hit the ground running on job hunting? Whats in a good resume? Whats a good place to start looking? I like the feeling of knowing that i did something on my own (reason i started the CFA in the first place) so any tips would be appreciated.

I am looking to move to a different city but won’t move until I have a job (the market is so bad right now that I have to have a safety net before I jump). Anyway, it’s been tough to get consideration as a non-local candidate since there are so many local candidates that can fill any open positions. I’ve been targeting cities I have family in and using that as a reason to move, but even still, I always feel as though I am at a disadvantage.

me too. i feel like i am at disadvantage since they can easily hire someone next door. anyone has any suggesions on how to approach this issue please.

EMRA32, I live in LS, I agree it is AWESOME and my commute is 23 min door to door.
