So, a Korean woman goes into CVS to pick up some photos, and the cashier identified her on her receipt as “Ching Chong Lee”. The woman is upset because of the “intolerable discrimination” and is suing for $1m.
My .02 - Seriously? A million dollars? For “Ching Chong Lee” on a receipt? A receipt that she could easily throw away, and nobody would ever see again? It’s not as if they wrote it in a national newspaper next to a picture of her naked.
I’m not advocating overt racism, but if I’m a judge, I’m throwing this one out of court.
People still get photos developed at CVS? Seriously though, how is Hyun Lee pronounced? I’m not familiar with Korean. Is it pronounced “hi - yun” or the pronunciation something that a minimum wage, south Jersey hick could mistake for something relatively close to Ching Chong?
Not exactly the same, but as far as private institutions go, there was a whole lot of brouhaha - rising to a level of kerfuffle even - when Augusta National guys refused entry to Tiger (and then, to women.) Well what about Harvard and Ivy League colleges wher Asians need to lie about their race just to get in?
U of California lifted race quotas and number of Asians doubled from 20% to 40%, IIRC. Of course it’s a public institution; but racism in privates ones doesn’t make it right.
I don’t see what the harm here is. It’s not like she was refused service, forced to wait longer in line, charged extra or did not receive the product she was intending to purchase.
When did Augusta National refuse entry to Tiger Woods? Lee Elder played in the Masters before Tiger was even born and the club began accepting black members while Tiger was still a junior amateur.
^ You’re right, it has not. I was going on hearsay from something a friend told me a long time ago. Only women denied, as far as Augusta National goes.
^ Fair enough. Augusta National has certainly not been at the forefront of the progressive movement. They did admit their first 2 female members last year though, Condoleza Rice being one of them.
You can call a lawyer and sue anyone for anything. That doesn’t mean the lawyer won’t take your money, submit your suit to the court, and then say sorry after the judge laughs you out netting their bank account several $K.
