CHO, A New Title of Leadership

This title needs to be created in large organizations, especially now in this economic environment. The infamous “three character” and always capital letter title signifies power, command, and leadership among other things: CEO CFO COO CIO (Investment) CTO (Technology). These are all well respected and carry much weight in organizations. However, where is HR- where is the three letter “CHO” or Chief of Human resources Officer? HR is usually in the same group, is a direct report to the CEO or COO, but where is the “C” title? It should be there. The head of HR needs to be a title of command and leadership, especially in this job environment. Companies without command over their HR will find their employees fleeing to better opportunities where their needs are better served. However, and also in summary, it is not about the title. HR doesn’t need a shiny new title. They need to take the leadership to lead their company out of this economic crisis with employees passionate about conquering market share and finding new profit centers to create value. It will be clear within the near future which companies are still sparking a fire in their employees. This will mainly be seen in an economic landscape of deflated companies, with the value and air out of them like deflated basketballs as their employees have left for bigger and better things, only to leave a shell of a company, able to be bounced no more. The PE firms and companies of the like will swoop in to collect these shells of discounted companies in order to try to re-create value. . . . and the economic cycle will continue.

Do you work in HR?

So what you’re saying is that Numi shouldn’t have gone to MBA schoolin?

I see… As an unrelated question, have you recently experienced a traumatizing event that you’d like to talk about?

^ Yes, I have. The recent economic crisis has changed my view of the world.

Its not about Numi going to MBA school, but rather if companies will able to lure Numi from MBA school to their company (when he graduates) so that he can focus on what he is passionate about.

This is the first ever economic crisis that we have seen affect so many industries. In the recent past, they have had more of a focus (ie the IT bubble). When an economic crisis levels everyone, it enables employees to make their next upward move in a different career track or industry. We see this on AF everyday about people switching jobs or paths or tracks. This is why leadership in the HR arena and alignment of HR with strategy will be essential to retain valuable employees and recruit these new passionate people who are coming from other walks of life, but are still able and willing to create value in their new environment.
