Hi Christian - thanks for the comment, I appreciate you taking the time out to give us your thoughts.
I should have caveated my previous comment by mentioning that with regards to the actual Christian Cooper provided materials I have heard nothing but good things - and if you truly believe that release timing won’t be an issue then I can see your Wiley tie up as being a positive thing for future FRM candidates.
I just recently sat for FRM Part 1 in November and used Schweser and Bionic Turtle as my two sources of material, along with 1 complete read through the official GARP text books.
I found Schweser to be lacking significantly in depth and difficulty, oversimplifying and glossing over many of the “tougher” concepts - I could imagine anyone using it as their sole source of material could have had a nasty shock come exam day. I wouldn’t recommend their offering to anyone.
With Bionic Turtle, I found the notes to be half decent (if a little sparse), with their videos semi-useful. But really the selling point of BT is their large and very in-depth practice question bank…they have a couple thousand if I had to estimate, and I went through them all about 2/3 times. After doing that I found the real exam to be rather easy in comparison and am extremely confident of a pass in the next couple of days (let’s hope I dont have to eat my hat).
The offical GARP material was dry as hell, with lots of information and deviations of topics that weren’t at all necessary for the exam. As a point of reference, it does a decent job - but as a stand alone “study guide” it is also severely lacking in my opinion. There are practically no practice questions and the material is painful to pore over.
So to get to my point - from what I have seen there is definitely a need for a provider who offers a great, comprehensive, exam focused study guide that actually tackles the difficult topics head on, along with a comprehensive question bank with 2000-3000 practice questions that actually represent the correct difficulty level of exam questions (or a notch above). These two things are, in my mind, the killer combination.
I will (hopefully) be sitting Part 2 in November (after CFA L3 in June) and will definitely take a look at the new Wiley/Cooper offering before making my choice.
Is there anywhere we can download a sample study session or something to get an idea of the flavour of the study notes or parctice questions?
