Do you have any experience with the finance industry as a consultant? That would make it much easier to make the transition to finance. For someone who’s only made 2 by 2 charts for retailers, it will probably be much harder.

Top consulting firm or non-impressive one? Bschool an option? Any direct client facing experience?

Top consulting firm and direct client facing experience (usually at board level too as working in strategy) Really unsure as to what type of role my skillset will translate to, I don’t mind starting from bottom but don’t think I can even get an interview for most finance jobs given I don’t have inside industry experience

bschool an option but want to nail down this cfa beast first, am taking level II in june

How good is your undergrad? Are we talking Bain/McKinsey consulting? If you were at a target school, a top consulting shop and have CFA 1 then I may know of an opportunity for you. email me at DannyBoyFromAF@yahoo.com

You could get into a relationship manager type role, passing l2 might be necessary to get comfortable with you investments understanding. That could lead to actual investment options or a product specialist type role. That’s what I’d probably target, or an entry-level m&a position or ib analyst but that’s much less likely I think.

Thanks for your help anyways.

Come on, with experience in strategy from BCG, McKinsey and the likes you can get into PE or IB. At least in Europe.

I sincerely hope so but PE or IB is such a broad field. I would like to get some insider opinions in terms of the specific types of roles to go for in order to maximise career prospects and also not to waste any (more) time. At the moment I would welcome anything to get my foot in the door… but ideally I would like a role that gives me plenty of learning/development opportunities. This is not something that I can find out simply by hitting the CFA books so decided to try my luck conversing with real people =)
