Corporate Finance to Investment Mgmt

Hi, I am about to graduate from college with a Bachelor’s degree in finance. I originally wanted to go into investment management, but I see that it is very competitive: thousands of applications for only a few hundred spots. As of now, I’ve been shut out of investment management…and I was wondering if I were to get a job working in a corporation’s treasury or corporate finance division (or a credit analyst at a bank) if that would be a good way to transition into investment management at a buy-side or sell-side firm. I’d be studying for the CFA during the process. What do you think of my plan?
