Me and some friends are discussing possibly taking a trip the week after Easter. Anyone ever been? Have any tips on things to see/not to see? Flights to San Jose are about $265 round trip, from there we would hop on a short flight to the coast and spend the week in a sweet house that we would rent that sleeps 6 for $800/week total.
Make sure you’re going to the Pacific, the Atlantic is pretty grungie with higher crime. Can’t drink the water in Limon (Atlantic) but the rest of the country you can. No matter where you go, keep your eyes on your gear. It’s a very peaceful country with no real violent crime (no military either) but a lot of theft.

There is no Atlantic side, it’s Caribbean and Pacific. There’s a lot of stuff to do and see, you don’t really need to plan it in advance, but almost where ever you go it’s going to take a 3 hour bus ride, so keep that in mind if you want to leave the beach.
Make sure you take some bug spray to ward off the natives.
Thank you captain technicality.
Now we have Captain Awesome and Captain Technicality. The Captain Grammar title is still too close to call though.
Make sure you take your grammatically challenged girl friend with you and leave her on the Atlantic side.
Costa Rica is not exactly a place to find girls if that is why you are going. If not, strongly recommend Arenal. It is an active volcano. Stay at the lost iguana in the jungle. Also check out manuel antonio on the beach. Good surfing, good night scene, lots of monkeys. Costa Rica is an amazing, awesome place. Do eat the steak and fruit. It is also awesome.

+1 for Arenal. We also rented a house on the Pacific side. It was a sweet place up on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Awesome view. Found it on vrbo dot com. The roads (almost) all suck, so if you rent a car, go with the 4X4.
dont rent a car. roads are way too confusing.
I agree with the active volcano, there’s a resort called Tabacon by the thermal springs in Costa Rica, it is AWESOME if you’re going with a date. They’ve sculpted the natural thermal springs into these warm flowing rivers through jungle and at night you can look up and still see lava glowing on the volcano’s side. Manuel Antonio is also awesome as a beach location. It’s tucked away next to soaring jungles but still has some night life along with the monkeys that were mentioned. There’s a phenomenal B&B there called Mango Moon. Also, during January there’s a 24-7 party that rages called Fiesta de Palmares in the town called Palmares. It’s worth seeing too. If you’re good looking you will definitely find nice ladies there.

Another vote for Arenal. The hot springs are also way cool. Also, you can go on an excursion where you ride horseback to the top of a mountain and do a zipline canopy tour to return to the base, all with Arenal as the backdrop. Don’t plan to spend much time in San Jose. Depending on where you are flying from, you can actually catch a flight into Libera airport near the Pacific coast, then travel through the mountains to San Jose to catch your departing flight. We dove the Pacific. Some cool diving if you like to see big animals, but don’t expect much from the visibility and don’t expect to see coral.
